The fact that no school would assign Hello World, as VC does it for you, and certainly not in Nov, is one reason that this is obviously a troll. But why are you asking him to help you lose our bet ?

a "hello world" app is the premise of nearly every book and language. As to why help loose my bet. If I had said "say you were not drinking and I'll help you.. I loose just for influencing the answer.. if you follow my meaning... personally... I just figured it the work of a moron.. but I am STILL new here so you all likely got it pegged (and ps.. i'm in for just 5 bucks... i lose.. just give me the po... mamma didn't raise no welchers.. True, it's the first thing a professor might SHOW you, not ask you to turn in.

I may be wrong, the levels of stupidity some people achieve still surprises me. It could be an assignment at a sheltered workshop.

*grin* Are we talking $5 AU or $5 US ? You know it would cost that to send it, don't you ?
And in relation to an earlier comment, most people here ARE good, but there more than 52,000 members, so you've got to expect one or two strange ones. This guy is not even a member. Even so, I've had a few flame wars, mostly regarding my opinion of US gun law. One great thing about this place is that we can yell at each other a bit, and not hold a grudge. If not for that, I'd have been tarred, feathered and run out of town a long time ago.

there is an instance of this provided in VC6, don't even have to type nothing, just select the 'hello world' app

I long ago stopped being surprised by the depths of stupidity than an individual can display.

US of course... I'd hate to short change you.
I am quite serious about paying up...I owe and I pay... and we are talking what... I have to have 2 beers next lunch instead of four.. i'll survive... so don't give me crap about why you can't accept... you have my email... settle up in private. And never mention we used this forum to make a bet. Oh.. can you accept US currency or do you rather I do the exchange afore sending?

That, and that it's silly to try and discuss it with people in the US who have been brainwashed to think that it's their right to be able to kill one another, and that somehow that right means that their government is honest and scared of them.

Possibly, but it's also a blunt representation of the view I have formed after discussing the issue on CP over the years, and hearing what to me are insane statements from people I otherwise regard as intelligent. It's clearly a difference of culture, which means the knife cuts both ways, but I still don't get it.

Since you asked, as I'm rarely inclined to give my opinion on much of anyting unless the mode stikes me: I think the US gun laws are a load of cr**. I have an M1, a 410, 2 12- gaueges, a 10 gauge, and an 8 gauge which dont do much, also have a 308 (my favorite deer rifle), 30.06 and a few hand guns. I'm a hunter, not for sport, I feed my family on it. I've been shot once, stabbed twice and never had to bring a gun into the frey.(and on two of those occasions I could)... US gun laws aren't aimed at those of who are law abiding, they are trying to disarm crimmals.. but lets face it, they are crimminals.. if some law is passed that says a particular firearm is out-lawed, do you think that they will get in line to turn it in. I admit that there are too many guns here, but they are here, I cringe everytime a legislative question comes up wether to further disarm the honest citizenery or not. In the end... the crimminals will keep there weapons..all the worse for those of us who obey the law.

US guns laws seem to me to only exist to ARM citizens, I have never heard of any attempt to disarm anyone.
Mel Feik wrote:

This is a dumb argument. OF course criminals won't hand in their guns, but if guns are freely available it's much easier for them to get them in the first place. What's more the point is the children and general wackos who get them. We had a school shooting in Australia the other week. The shooter legally owned all of his guns. It was huge news, the first school shooting here I know of. I've read of two in the US since that happened.
Additionally, if my home is invaded or someone tries to rob me, it's unlikely they will have a gun. If I was in the US, I'd have to count on it.
Mel Feik wrote:

True for the ones who have them now, and an example of the legacy of the 'right to bear arms'.

But I will not be unarmed to the best the law allows!!!

Dear All ,
I got a problem can you solve this,
The user as he moves on the mouse over a Microsoft Word Document,
i should be able to fetch the word at his mouse pointer and display the word
in vc++ program. Usually the mouse points at a character , i should be able
to fetch the whole word. This is only for the client area.
How can i attach to the running instance of word document ,
and how to relate the pixel on screen to the coresponding text (word).
Any idea, how to go about the problem,
thanks in advance,
with regards,
alex.

Well, this is a variation on a question that seems to do the rounds quite often. If it's within Word, it may be possible, but I have no idea how. Have you looked at MSDN to see what methods Word exposes via COM ?

All I can say is that there is probably no easy solution to this problem. To get help you should:
- browse the Word type library ( c:\program files\Microsoft Office\Office\MSWORD9.OLB )
- check out some microsoft newsgroups - there is an excellent search at http://www.tamaracka.com/mssearch.htm[^]. The best Word MVP there in my opinion is Cindy Meister - do a search on her posts and see what newsgroups you get.
- then there's http://www.mvps.org/word[^]
but as I said, I don't think there is an easy solution to this problem.

I have been told to write a list of 27 items, each with 6 subitems describing their colours, shapes, border sizes etc to the registry. In the past I have asociated two comma seperated items, within one registry key, with each other, but with this much data this seeems inefficient.
My question, is there a more efficient way of storing all these related items within the registry?

Create a .reg file, and use ::RegLoadKey() to load the hive to the current open key.
Doing so, you don't need to manage all the open key, create value stupid mess.

VC.NET seems to be even more complicated than VC, and the funny thing is, VC.NET doesnt even come with a dialog editor!? the dialog editor is already bad in version 6 - compared to that of VB, VB is so much more intuitive (I'm refering to the dialog editor. u can edit properties on the side and simple things like a tab control, VC6 support is ridiculous and certainly doesnt live up to the label "visual"....
but when it comes to COM and stuff... not sure... do we still need VC.NET? or just stick with {VC.6 + VB.NET/C#}? Any advantage in addition to backward compatibility?
