In VB.net, it is necessary to enclose an identifier in brackets if (1) the identifier matches the name of a keyword, and (2) the identifier is used in a context where the keyword would be valid. Enclosing an identifier is harmless in any case (except, of course, when what one really wants is the keyword).

I would expect that some programmers habitually enclose in brackets identifiers that would be valid as keywords in any context, rather than try to worry about contexts where they might be mistaken as keywords.

As for the parentheses around the string literal, I see no particular reason for them. They're harmless, but pointless.

I just wanted to know because I was testing the Spices.Net decompiler for .Net and everytime it decompiled one of my projects it would put the [] around the .Text bit.

i've used in the left part a treeview control to choose the options cathegories but on the right part I want to insert more controls panels for each cathegory,

How to show desktop from an application

I am working on a macro app. I need to know how to show the desktop from my application. I already have functions from the user32 and kernel32 that will do things like minimize windows, close windows, ect. Is there a function inside a windows dll that will show the desktop, or is there another way to do it? I have already tried to do something simple like

Shell("Show Desktop.scf")

And that failed miserably.

The desktop is shown by minimising all the windows, enumerating and minimising seems the best way to me.

This is C# code but it should be easy to convert.

You'll need to add a reference to shell32.dll which is in the System32 folder in XP.

Hello, I am beginner vb.net programmer from Greece. I would appriciate if someone could help where to search to find how can i draw on an immage on a form. For example to draw dots or simple lines on a specific image on a picture that is placed on a picture box and then save it in a database as an image. The only thing that i know is the database part.

You use the paint event to draw on your form, draw the bitmap first then draw on it. The Graphics object is what you need to research.

Dear Friends,

I have developing a small project in vb.net. i used data gridview control to show the many employer detail row by row also i have done. data gridview it contain nearly more than 15 column.

Here i have to make a split up column like below
1. While using the vertical scroll my first column should be show remaining column go to behind of first column or hide. i have the employee id in first column at the same time i have the employee address in 10th column when use vertical scroll the first column will gone then i can't able to identify the employee address.

Can you tell me it is possible to do.
If it it is possible kindly provide the code.

but it give error:
Insufficient key column information for updating or refreshing.

it remove the data from datagrid but not from ms access database

Have you initiated a Development in vb6?

If so,VB6 its Dead incase you dont know. Try to learn C# or vb.net.If your Company is Still Planning to keep vb6 apps and you have to maintain them, start sending out your resume because you are going to kill your skills. Now lets get back to your error.To update a Database record.. the Server has to know exactly which record it is that you want to change.. ie. it needs a UNIQUE key of some kind to process the record. IF in your DataBase table you do NOT define a field as being unique, ADO will look at the data and then try to build a (temporary)UNIQUE key.. which then can be used to perform the update. Sometimes ADO
is successful in doing this.. and sometimes it is NOT (as witnessed by your present dilemna).The first thing you should do is go and check the Tables you are using to make sure that each of them has at least ONE unique field defined.. and if there is none.. add a Unique identifyling field (such as an Autonumber) to it.

Go to the table that you want to Update and make sure that there is a Primary_key, What database are you using?, Send me a Structure and will help you.

Hello Everybody

I have 3 form on my project

1. frmNewOrder (have a button called btnPayment also have orderID)
2. frmExistingOrder (have a button called btnPayment also have orderID)
3. frmPayment

when you click btnPayment from frmNewOrder or frmExistingOrder then how can I send orderID value to frmPayment

I have done something

Public Shared OrderID As Integer (on frmNewOrder)
I put code on frmOrder page load events
orderID = frmNewOrder.OrderID

I know its really a wrong concept.

Any idea or example will be really helpful

how are you creating a new instance of frmPayment? in the click event of btnPayment correct? Pass the value into frmPayment after creating the instance.

dim frmPay as new frmPayment
frmPay.OrderID = me.OrderID
frmPay.showdialog

Hi,

If frmPayment isn't equal to nothing then you can set a variable in frmPayment through a public property.

e.g.

in frmPayment:

dim intOrderId as integer

Public WriteOnly Property OrderID() as Integer
   Set(byval value as Integer)
      intOrderId = value
   End Set
end property

and in frmNewOrder:

frmMyPayment.OrderID = orderID

However, if frmPayment is not yet initialised, you can call the new constructor passing the orderid as a parameter.

e.g.

in frmPayments:

public sub new(byval orderID as integer)
   me.intOrderID = orderID
end sub

and in and in frmNewOrder:

Dim frmMyPayment as new frmPayment(orderid)
