Hi, I am new to .NET. I am building an appln in vb.net/ ms access. Everytime, some processing happens, the windows form becoms blank and is not accessible. I have heard that this issue is occurring since all the processing happens in the main thread and this issue can be solved by using threading.
Can someone provide some links or information regarding threading and how to use it in my appln. Thnx.

hi everybody

i am working on vb 6.0. iwant to save a web page on my local drive. i want to do that in the same way as we save from the file menu save as command in internet explorer,means all the images in the page as well as links should be saved.
if anybody have idea about that please help me

Is it possible to button click Y/N in an email and change a db field

Is it possible to click a button in an email and have that

Example:

I want to send an email to a customer and ask them if they are over
the age of 30 Y/N?

Can the Y/N value be returned in an email and automatically change the db field to

Yes. It'll work just like as Web Application. The body of the email contains an HTML page. Clicking a button on that page posts the response back to your web server, exactly like any WebForms app.

Yes. But not always and not every (web) email client supports them nowadays for fear of Web-Bugs.

The best bet would be send a plain text email with an hyperlink so that the user can visit the website and submit the data.

There are advantages to this approach:

(*) Avoiding phishing websites.
(*) Avoiding or Minimizing WebBugs in emails.
(*) Smaller Sized email messages.
(*) More Secure Messages

I am pulling data from a MSAccess database and displaying the data in a datagrid using a DataGridTableStyle.

How do I add a button or drop down list to the DataGrid.

Books for Deployment Project

Can someone please point me to some good references that will tell me how to control a Visual Studio deployment project?

Through trial-n-error, I just spent more than a day building my first deployment project. The biggest problem/frustration was getting the files to go into the 'right' directories. I've got at least a half dozen VB.Net books. Only the college text book mentions deployment in any detail, but it's working with some simple examples.

I've got lots of questions and I can probably dig out most of the answers if there is a good book or web site out there about deployment projects.

Thanks for the help guys. The links from ProgLoad were great. I re-built the installer last night in just over an hour.

Johnny, the install isn't too complicated. A single EXE in a sub-directory under Program Files with the Help files in a sub-directory under that. The data files are in two directories (Data and Backup) under Documents & Settings. One of my problems was managing the project properties, which aren't where I expected them.

I am trying to learn how to use tools for office using the northwind database.

I am trying to populate NorthWind db data on to an existing word document template
that can be saved then re-used :

I cannot find any tutorial that shows how to perform this. MSDN does not show this

The "eval" command does not exist in VB. I wish to do something that is possible in other languages:

An immediate answer is, "Create an array of objects!". Problem: the "myObject" throws events that I need to handle. If I create an array of "myObject"s, the objects can no longer throw events... even if they did, how would you handle them?

What would it handle?

Not true! Create your array of objects, remembering to execute a AddHandler statement to manually wire up the event handlers.

AddHandler[^] docs. Don't forget to disconnect the handlers with RemoveHandler before the objects die!

Is there a simple and fast way to tell if a file is locked by another process?

I need to ensure that a zipfile is not locked by another process prior to adding a new file.

Since it is possible for another process to aquire a lock in the time it takes from checking to trying to open the file* yourself I would suggest the better approach is to set up a try/catch mechanism to catch the condition where the file is locked.

Yes, I know it sounds like a tiny amount of time - a few processor instructions - but since Windows is a preemptive multitasking environment there is a strong possibility that the operating system will intervene to give another process its fair share of processor time

I am calling the DynaZip ActiveX control which is returning the ZE_CREAT errormessage (see below). I would think that the ActiveX control would allow you to handle locked files, but I can't find any property that applies. I was attempting to determine if the file was locked prior to calling the control. I may attempt to call this process in a loop until it returns a successful zip message (or another error).

ZE_CREAT = could not create output file - This error can occur when the target ZIP file or the directory to contain the ZIP file is locked or restricted by another.

i have a search textbox and search button on the MainForm (MdiParent). when users clicks on search button it shows the search results from the customer table in ChildForm's dataGridView. but since i only show the same instance of the ChildForm, it only works for the first time. how do i show the new search results without creating new ChildForm instance?
