Is it an error and if it is how can I manage it?
No, this is simply a message warning you that your program exited normally.
It can be useful, e.g, when you make a program that runs for a long time without no visible output.
Due to technical difficulties my previous signature, "I see dump people" will be off until further notice. Too many people were thinking I was talking about them...

Am trying to create a setup program for a small database driven program and am hoping to reduce the size of the package by NOT including the msvbvm60.dll. It would enable me to email the setup package rather than multiple diskettes or CD. Is there a way this can be done?

There might be a way to do it, but it's likely that your app won't run if you do. This dll is the Visual Basic Virtual Machine, introduced in VB6, and included in Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows 2003 Server. It was also included in Back Office Server and SQL Server, so if your target machines are running these products already, you might get away with it. You can check here[^] for other dlls that might be unnecessary, though.
Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

I had thought to make use of the available ftp sites for this dll if it was not already on a target machine. But I can't seem to remove it without the Wizard disallowing it.
much thanks

The Package and Deployment Wizard's runtime (setup1.exe ) is written in Visual Basic, and therefore requires msvbvm60.dll . You can't exclude it.
These days I would recommend filing the PDW in a bit-bucket, and using Visual Studio Installer[^] instead. Or anything else.

If msvbvm60.dll is already on a target system, setup1.exe would run wouldn't it? It sounds to me that VB will not allow it. I can exclude the "VB runtime and OLE automation" but it would be unmanageable to have to sort this bundle out and make sure they are all there beforehand. I thought it would be simpler to exclude just the one dll.
Ah well, thanks for your advice. I'll have to think of some other way.

How do you get a users default email client and open it from a VB .NET windows desktop application? Note this is not for a web application.

An easy way to do it is to Shell execute "mailto:someone@somewhere.com", just like you would do in a web page link...

Hello,
I write shareware and at present use VB6 for my programs. I was wondering if there would ever be a time when it wouldn't be necessary to include the .NET runtime (all 20 MB) in VB .NET distributions. The size of the runtime prevents me migrating to VB .NET, because it is so impractical for small shareware programs downloaded from the Internet.
Is the runtime going to be included in future versions of Windows, for example?
Thanks,

Yes, Windows Server 2003 already comes with the .NET Framework installed. And it looks like every new version of Windows will also come with it.
But, that won't help the millions of user who are still on Windows 98, Windows NT, 2000, and XP. They'll still have to download and install the Framework...

When obtaining NewsGator (a .NET based RSS aggregator) from their website, they check your CLR/.NET version from the Internet Explorer version string that gets sent as part of any HTTP request, and presents the appropriate download for you. That way users with .NET already installed don't have to redownload it.
And .NET installs are more common than you might think, it seems (I've seen figures ranging from 20 to 50% of all desktops). If you have a website for distributing your apps, check your logs to see how prevalent it is yourself and decide from that.

Thanks for your note. That is an impressive statistic. Certainly if .NET is adopted widely I will definitely think of migrating soon.

That's true. My dad just bought a new PC and it had .NET preinstalled

Hi guys...
Looking to do a "report designer" in VB.net. Requirement comes from users struggling with Crystal reports, and wanting something simpler.
What I'm looking to do, is embed some sort of word doc editor inside a winform. Don't really want to buy a component, but would like to be able to do things like add logos, text and <<>>tagged fields which a separate component then parses and fills in...
Any ideas anyone?

I don't think the subject is the best pick.
I'll give you an example before I state my question:
-When you load VB.NET you are presented with a welcome screen.
-When you click on online help, a tab is created and you can read the help without leaving the program or window.
This is what I want to find out:
-I have already created the program and developed a customized, working tab sheet in my SDI application. I want to present a welcome screen, tutorial, help, etc on this tab.
-Do I create the documents in WORD and embed them somehow? Are they XML or preprogrammed line for line using labels?
There's got to be a solution! Please help!

I have written an add-in using VB.NET. Yipeee! OK, I've calmed down now!
My add-in inserts some code which I wrap in a #region declaration and I want to automatically collapse the region to hide the generated code to keep the developers code in view as much as possible.
Has anybody done this? I have tried using the Collapse and OutlineSection but I dont know if I am setting myself up in the text selection object correctly...
' Get a text object
Dim lText As TextSelection = CType(applicationObject.ActiveDocument.Selection, TextSelection)
' Move to the beginning of the document so we can iterate over the whole thing.
lText.StartOfDocument()
If lText.FindPattern(mRegionHeader) Then
lText.WordLeft()
lText.OutlineSection()
lText.Collapse()
End If
Any ideas would be warmly welcomed.

Hi,
How can I send a word document object from server to client thru remoting architecture.
I am using word object model for word 2003 in vb.net.
Actually, from client side, if I pass a .net type like Datatable or dataset etc to server by reference and on server side, i manipulate it, then the effects are reflected on client side very well.
I create a word.document object on client side, and send to server. On server side, I do some manipuation on it and return. Then on client side, the object becomes {System.Runtime.Remoting.Proxies.__TransparentProxy}.
I dont know what going wrong somewhere.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanx
