I had a pc problem reciently. I'm running windows xp sp2. It suddenly became unstable, and crashed a few times, and when it rebooted zone alarm and my virus checker were suddenly gone. When I try to start either of these it gives me "this is not a valid windows executable" and same thing happens when I try to reinstall them. Also I can't start in safe mode, the pc just restarts if I try. All other programs work fine and it no longer crashes. I have a bad feeling that I have somehow got a trojan on my pc. Anyone know a way to fix the problem, other that formating the disk drive and re-installing windows?

Yes, since you say your security applications got disabled/currupted right after the computer was unstable i would also think it might be some kind of malware. Since you now have difficulty to get into safemode, or some other mode to remove it when the malware(s) are not running i would suggest UBCD[^] as it has some antivirus scanners you can run right off the CD, without depening on the OS on the HDD.
In some cases the damage can allready be done to varius other parts of the system, in which you may not think of them to be virus related, therefore it might sometimes be better to re install everything.
But UBCD is worth a try.
Manual editing (IE you get into safe mode) is also worth a try.
Hope this helps..

Hi,
I got a laptop in my shop, it is huge... Siemens nixdorf scenic mobile 700. It is used in a automechanic shop to analyze modern cars...
The problem is very simple, the screen of the laptop is very small 800x600 maximum resolution, and somebody got their hands on the laptop and changed display settings, setting the fonts to 500%, so when windows boots i can see only 20% of the screen, everything i super large, I went to safe mode, and changed those settings to normal couple of times, and it doesn't work, it can't change it for some reason, it says ok- restart computer, but when I do restart the 500% is still there, I have tried in normal mode ( by connecting a second monitor so I could see what i'm doing) and same thing.
Any ideas...
And is there a way in win95 to change all the settings on the OS to default values...?
this problem is very challenging and frustrating...
Thank you!

Check with another Windows 95 machine and find out the keyboard shortcuts to reach the display settings and use those shortcuts on your laptop.

Reboot with safe mode and uninstall display driver from device manager. When system will reboot it will ask you for display driver, just install them.

When displaying a dialog form with BorderStyle = FixedDialog in Vista with Aero, SystemInformation.Border3DSize.Width and SystemInformation.BorderSize.Width both give incorrect sizes (seems to be 2px too small).
Does anyone know a workaround for this? I don't really want to alter the value manually as it will then be incorrect if a different theme is used.

I recently signed up for no-ip and got things working on my local machine but no one else can reach my site.
1) I type http://localhost Ok
2) I type http://woodware.no-ip.biz OK
3) I have my computer networked with another computer running Server 2003 and type
http://woodware.no-ip.biz. OK
I'm running XP Pro
I've set up my IIS to point to my site and set all permissions, etc. I need I believe?
Set an exception in my Firewall for Port 80
Is there something I've missed?
Has anyone done this using no-ip?
Any gotchas?
Or anything I might have overlooked?
There support sucks!
Thanks in advance. This is my first attempt at setting up a site so any help would be appreciated.

Looked up http://woodware.no-ip.biz and it returned IP 75.92.115.47
With the IP address, ping takes 280 ms roundtrip and an average of 525 for the www address.
But no HTML data is returned.
Presumably you have set port forwarding on your router ?

Thanks for your response, I was thinking a config problem but,
I don't have a router am running straight out of my box. Is there a setting in my network device I need to set to not forward?
Thanks for your help...I;m so close that its frustrating.

Richard,
Thanks, I know the risks. Once I get it going I want to transfer the site to the machine I'm using as my server and I don't care what happens to it and I can block/firewall from my machine? Basically just want to learn how to do it, limitations, etc. and also to allow some family to exchange pics. etc..
Thanks for the help

Thanks
The problem is I've done all that and still not working. I've called my provider to see if they are blocking it and they say no. But if I can enter http://woodwar... and it returns it on both my machines I know its getting to no-ip and they are redirecting DNS back but I'm thinking theres something I just haven't set up on my machine to allow IUSR_nnn to enter?
Try it if it don't work I give up?
Thanks,
Mike

Not sure what you are going to make of this ...
Both ANT tools and WS_PingPro pack tells me that http://woodware.no-ip.biz is IP 79.92.115.47
but
I am getting conflicting data returns. Centralops.net thinks the IP address is 204.16.252.108 and is timing-out and using jellybaby.net for traceroute it can't get past item 7 on the list below. And ANT tools can't find woodware.no-ip.biz and WS_PingPro cannot resolve 204.16.252.108

Again thanks for your help,
I think the confusion is my ISP (Clearwire - they absolutely suck) The tech rep I talked to said they change the IP's everyday but mines been at 75.92.115.47 since I started this several days ago.
So I got to think they may be doing some kind of forwarding or something thats not allowing traffic to get to me. I give up, but I do appreciate your input and assistance. I've got 6mos. left on a 2 yr. contract with them and I'm gonna drop them and pick up a decent provider. Can you recommend any cheap host sites?
Thanks again,
Mike

That has been asked far too many times on these forums. And there has been almost as many different answers.
Here is one to look at but I have no idea how good/bad/indifferent they are http://www.discountasp.net/[^]

I was trying to debug a disk space issue in my colleague's system. We narrowed down to a weird issue as outlined below:
1) When you right click Windows folder from Explorer Tree and choose properties, it shows 12 GB.
2) When you select ALL the files from the right pane of C:/Windows/ and choose properties, it shows 2.5 GB. (I have ensured that hidden and system files are also shown). The right click also includes a recursive traversal/calculation right, since it takes a while to calculate the figures.
Any clues on where does a huge difference of 10 Gigs creep in from?

You have the 'Hide Protected Operating System Files' option checked. This hides anything with System and Hidden flags set. One of the items with these flags is the C:\Windows\Installer folder, which caches MSI files that you've installed (with any embedded files stripped out). Also, all Windows Installer patches are cached, and here the embedded file cabinet is retained.
Visual Studio 2005 SP1 is a 455MB patch. That's where a lot of the space has gone.
In addition, Windows Installer 3.x supports uninstallable patches. What do you think it does with all the files that are needed to reinstall the old version? That's right, it caches them under a hidden system folder under C:\Windows\Installer named $PatchCache$. Visual Studio 2005 SP1 is an uninstallable patch, so there's 1.2GB (on my system) of backed-up files in a folder named 0E8BA73496BF22242B086AF4D32E5219, which is the 'compressed' version of the product GUID.
I'm not sure, but I think you can delete these cached folders. If you ever decide to uninstall VS2005 SP1, and go back to the original release, I think you would then need to provide the original install media.
You might try using one of Jam Software's TreeSize[^] programs. There's a professional edition, a personal edition[^] for home use, and a free edition[^] which tells you the folders, but not the files, which are taking all the space.
