Is it possible, for a given folder, to eliminate
the alphabetic order, so that the files would stay

Have you tried sorting it out by 'Date Modified'?

BTW you tagged it as VB, is your question related to it?

In Windows Explorer, if you click on a column header, the files will be sorted accordingly (by name, size, date, etc.). If you mean some other sort order, then the answer is probably no.
