Which install first visual studio 2010 or sql server 2008

Hello All,
I have installed visual studio 2010 one year ago.But I did n't install sql server.But Management studio was not there in microsoft sql server folder.Now I have installed SQL Server 2008 in my system.Its already installed.But sql server managment studio is not connecting with the server.
My question is it due to I have installed visual studio first than sql server 2008?
What can I do resolve this problem?
