SQL Express Installation on a server with SQL Server 2005 on it

Hi, i have a server running SQL Server 2005 and i would like to replace this with SQL Server 2008 express edition. The plan is to first install sql express on to the server, then I am hoping to create a back up of the database from server 2005, stop server 2005, restore database to server express 2008, and carry on seemlessly.

I have planned to take a restore point before i do anything at all, but i want to know can the two programs co exist on the same server? (With SQL server 2005 becoming effectively redundant until such time as i remove it entirely)

The reason i do not wish to back up the database, then remove 2005 is that i cannot reinstall it once it has gone, (for reasons beyond my control). Therefore it is critical i keep it in place should sqlexpress 2008 not function correctly once installed and database restored.

Will the installation throw up any problems that you may know of.

What should i check for prior to installation?

Any advice, alternative ideas or anything else i need to be aware of would be greatly appreciated.Thank you.

What?

Backup the database anyway. How is the installation of sql2k5 in anyway related to it's backup?

Solution 1

Installing 2008 Express in parallel shouldn't be a problem (I'm not an expert though), I'm not sure about restoring a backup made with a previous version. However, regardless of what's supported I just wanted to strongly recommend testing and practicing whatever you want to do in a VM before attempting to perform the procedure in production.

Thanks for the response. I will post the results on monday. Dont have VM, so just gonna go for it.If all else fails i shall just jump back to the restore point.
