I've used CodeProject for a while but today I decided to respond to a question for the first time. I tried to be cordial, thorough, and accurate. I'm not upset that my answer wasn't chosen. But I'm confused as to why I was down voted. If I made a technical error, I would like to understand it so I don't make it again when coding. If it is an error in etiquette I would like to know so that I don't continue to alienate fellow programmers.

My Answer:
When is null not a null?

The short answer is that people will (mostly) down vote anything and everything for any reason or no reason at all, including correct answers. Do not worry too much about it.

Thanks for encouraging me!

Ironically your question has also been voted down ... I sort of know why (it wasn't me!) ... there are other forums to post questions like this ... including reporting abuse (we have had spats of random downvoting just because the facility is there - as per ThePhantomUpvoter's comment. Don't be down-hearted and keep trying to help! :-)

Chill60<<I wasn't aware that there were other forums I should post this kind of question in. After looking around, I think I see how to do that now. I appreciate you bringing that to my attention. It would be more helpful if people who down vote were required to give a reason. It may reduce the number of down votes as well.

@Khan Ji<<I'm not sure why it wouldn't let you vote 5. That's weird.

1 solution

Hi, it was my question and my decision to vote the solution down.

In fairness, looking back at the example I gave. I should of used Session and not QueryString in my example.

Session returns an Object and it's the conversion of an Object using Convert.ToString which returns the empty string.

Your conclusion and test was correct so I'll go back change the score. :-)

"Hi, it was my question and my decision to vote the solution down. "

Actually it is the communities decision. You are part of the community so you do have a say and have the ability to "Accept" and answer. As for direct voting any member can do that.

And as was pointed out in the comments people will vote up and down because of the oddest issues. Can't get hung up on it. CP was not always point based and there are some that don't like the points. Others are obsessed with them. Others just randomly care on a whim.
Best not get to concerned with them. Treat it like icing on the cake. Somedays maybe you want to lick the frosting and others it is too rich and you want the bavarian creme filling :-)
