This is one of the major challenges of becoming a developer: given a problem, how do you convert that vague idea into a design. Think about the different elements of your project and what technologies you need to use to make it work. You have already mentioned OCR, so that is something you can start with - Google will find you lots of information. I agree with what OriginalGriff said about going back to your lecturer. This here is probably not the right forum to collect ideas for your final year project.

Accidentally, I stumbled over an article here on CodeProject just a couple of days ago, which deals with a special branch of OCR and contour analysis. See this article here:

I could imagine that extending that article and applying it in a practicle application would make a fine year project. It has to do with OCR and is particularly useful in the nutrition packaging industry. Just take a look for yourself and see whether this would work for you. Then talk it over with your lecturer.

Final year project is there because you should learn to do things. If you get ready made things how could you improve. I think finding similar project you can just do by Goggling. I don't think its difficult. In real world challenges are much bigger than your college project. Try to solve your difficulty and come here with some specific problem.
