Can anyone suggest an open source C and C++ compiler?

Even though Hans' answer is correct, I would go further and recommend that you use one of the most commonly used open source compilers and go with g++/gcc. If you go with one of the most commonly used compilers you'll find a lot more help and resources when you need help.
