IIRC, there is a mode that deliberately does not follow HTML/CSS standards (but tries to be as wrong as IE7) and of course that is what Microsoft calls compatibility mode; whereas the way that is supposed to follow the official standards would be "incompatible" in their view.

There is IE8 mode and IE7 mode (compatibility mode). IE7 is far less compliant than IE8 so sites designed for IE7 can break on IE8. Then there is Standards and Quirks mode, and in Quirks mode all sorts of little weirdnesses (besides the normal browser weirdnesses) are introduced.
Our pages render in Standards mode, so it's just an issue with IE7 vs IE8 rendering. I'll have to look into what I can do to workaround it.

With the slight possibility that it's intermittent or somehow a problem in the server.
Currently on this thread I see blank lines whether there's a SPACE or not, but on that[^] post I see none even though I see SPACEs when I open it in edit -- I suspect that if I save it again it will show blank lines.
It also remains that I usually don't see the graphic for , but some times I do, and that was under IE7 as well.

Interesting.
Is there a way the page can instruct the browser which mode it should use (or in which order it should try the modes, or ...) or is it just a user setting, that "has to fit all pages"?

On the Tools menu there is access to a Compatibility View Settings dialog[^].
There you can have All websites use compatibility view and/or Intranet sites.
The user can also add specific sites to a list to use compatibility view.
From what I can see, I'm not using compatibility view.

I do on this thread, not on the other.
I don't have FireFox on this system at this time, I reinstalled everything a few weeks ago, hence IE8.

Here I did put a SPACE and didn't get the blank line, but I'll see how it looks after I save an edit.
Second edit -- I still saw no blank line.
Third edit -- Still no blank line. I did "View source" and saw:
<pre><br />Line <span class="code-digit">5</span><br /> <br />Line <span class="code-digit">6</span><br /></pre><
So the blank line should be there.

I (with FF) see empty lines everywhere.
I (with IE7) see only one empty line (5-6)
As I said before, it is an IE rendering issue, your input is fine, even with IE.

I just received an email from a reader of my article Font Survey: 42 of the Best Monospaced Programming Fonts. The email message started with the line "[reader] has posted a new comment at "Article "Font Survey: 30 of the Best Programming Fonts"". (My underlining). Obviously the CP email generator is picking up the initial title of the article, rather than the current title.

I don't see a simple solution to this, but there seem to be more and more examples of people posting large amounts of code in their questions, but without using the <pre> tags. In odd cases I take a look and see if I can help, but more often than not I just ignore it because it is so difficult to read, and I can't even be bothered to copy and paste into the IDE to compile it.
Unfortunately many of these questions are still getting resolved, so the OP thinks that formatting their code is not important, and continues to post their questions in this lazy manner.
Suggestions, comments, flames(preferably not)?

Yes, and possibly not a bad option. I was more concerned with how we get posters to realise that they are not doing themselves any favours by not doing it. Refusing to acknowledge their posts is one way but seems a bit harsh, and would probably cause more damage to the great reputation of The Code Project.

when code is not in a monospaced font, and not indented at all, I skip it. Period.
IMO readability is the first step to correctness; it is also a first requirement for getting help.
It isn't hard to do it right; and half the time, I advise using PRE blocks through my sig.

A "view source" button/link might be of use. That way, you can see what they typed without all the funkiness that HTML might do to code that is not in PRE tags or that was not HTML encoded. And if that view allowed the user to preview but not save the message, even better. Then we can just toss in some PRE tags, click "preview" and see everything well formatted. And preventing others from actually being able to modify the post would avoid issues of some users modifying others' posts to suit their fancy.
Visual Studio is an excellent GUIIDE.

When the article is rated 'Poor', a quick textbox pops up prompting for the reason and the subject is like 'My vote of 1'.
My concern is after submitting this, the webpage should do any of the following:
1) Make the comment appear on the page immediately using some DOM manipulation trick.
2) Reload the page.
Or at least a plain polite message replacing the voting control panel stating that 'Your vote and associated comments have been registered. Please reload the page'.

At times I admit that truant weeds needs to be cleared from the beautiful garden called CP forums. I feel that the current cleanup process is rather incomplete. Check out the following link:
