I made a post here a little while ago: http://www.codeproject.com/Lounge.aspx?msg=4291841#xx4291841xx[^]
and would think nothing of it, but as I looked at my latest statistics, it showed extremely down-voted. I look at it in the post board itself and see that my post didn't receive any votes at all. That's unusual. Before that I would always see votes in the board match that in the recent statistics. What went wrong there?
Plus I was surprised to see a neutral post like this getting so many down-votes anyway...
UPDATE:
A little later I was able to see votes again in my post, and it showed just 1 vote of 2, but the stat still would say "-16" points for this. This doesn't look right...

If a platinum debator downvoted you, then that 1 downvote is -16 points.

Ouch! I didn't know that. Kind of gives even less incentive for beginning debaters to participate, if their posts get murdered by those who simply chat non-stop. Not sure if this is a good thing though.

You won't get dinged if you don't make crap posts. Post something with wit, humor, and a little dirty action and you will get 24 instead of -16.

Every now and then, I post sheer brilliance and I am greatly rewarded for this by way of a shower of little "24's". Most of the time I piss people off and I get -16's up the ying yang.

Who cares about social networks? CP is a technical forum, and the lounge/soapbox are simply there to kick back and relax. If you post rubbish just to try to appear deep, you will get downvoted faster than a republican at a democrat conference. You have to earn the right to post crap; crap is earned, not given.

Some points are waited to the voter's reputation, some are limited per day.
It is a complex system, kind of explained here[^]
Also there is often caching so that scores which show up in your rep don't show in the forums until some time later.
The best thing is to not watch your reputation, that way madness lies.

...results in appearance of the same HTML-fix form, like it would when doing this during article editing, except the form appears truncated by about 80%, one can only see small part of the form on the right, can't even see the options to choose from.

I suggest that a vote on an article should be considered if:
- The account used to vote is at least 2 or 3 months old
- The account used to vote was involved in other activities (like voting on other articles, posting messages, downloading code, etc.,)
- If the vote is a 5, make it mandatory for the voter to comment on the article (and this comment cannot be deleted) so that everyone can see who has voted a 5.
- Votes that don't meet these criteria can be kept as a "dormant" until the account that voted meets the required eligibility criteria.
I am just proposing an idea so that voting is not misused by people to add undue advantage to their own articles. The points I mentioned may not be perfect, and may be others can give some insight into this.

This would certainly stop certain people posting articles and then getting all their friends to open CP accounts and give them 5s. I was sure it used to be the rule that only members with a reputation score above a certain level could vote on new articles; these days it seems to be open to everyone.
