It seems I was late for the party.
But I would like two functions in the message moderation queue.
First, I'd love a translate button.
Secondly, if three messages in the moderation queue has been rejected in a short time, the user should be autobanned. (three strikes and you're out, or whatever count you'd prefer)
We obviously need more than one report to avoid mistakes, but seriously, since only protectors can access the moderation queue you have already decided to trust us.

The problem today was that whoever was doing this was creating new accounts each time. So three strikes would not really have fixed it.
|
|
|
|
|
The ones that are posting right now seem to reuse their accounts as long as possible.
|
|
|
|
|
Yes, but as soon as one account gets killed it just creates more.
|
|
|
|
|
sure but that's a slightly lengthier process I believe even if it's automated, apparently the amount of posts can be handled. But we still need to moderate the messages, so let us concentrate on that.

Nothing to do with the spam wave - this bug has been present since at least November:
Incorrect message count on profile[^]
Chris said it was a caching issue, kicked the cache, and marked the bug as fixed. Unfortunately, the fix didn't last.
OG reported it again in January:
Odd message count[^]

Guess I should have done a search for it before posting it.
But I was a bit busy clobbering the spammers...

I guess Chris will kick it a bit harder soon enough.
It's not a high priority bug, just figured I'd let the hamster masters know

1)
This is an english site and the spammers are spamming in oriental language, other spam waves in the past were slavic languages...
When there is a huge rise in the reporting actions (the S&A group start working) or any other kind of trigger point...
could it be possible to block / send to moderation all what it is written using special chars (non roman alphabet) and not being posted in the "Non English language" forums?
----
2)
Another idea... a protectors only button for "spam wave" (in S&A Forum?) so that if a number X of protectors click there all messages of users created in the last X days (e.g. 3 days) go directly to moderation
#1 and #2 would give a bit of advantage since in the moderation queue is a couple of clicks and all items of the current list are out instead of 5 clicks per item
and we have everything centralized in a place, instead of having to hunt for them
--------------------
3a)
Today's first spammer was Nr. 14188734 and the latest one (by the time of this edit... they are still generating more) was Nr. 14189523 14189641 This means, the spammers have generated almost 1000 users in the last hours.
Would it be possible to put a limit of user generation coming from / by XXXX (whatever that is) per hour? I know this one is a bit tricky / difficult, since the spammers are probably using different IPs when generating users.
3b)
If CP detects an high rate of users generation (I don't know how many users per time unit will be created in usual times when spammers are not active), but (combining with #2) if the "spam wave" status is active, somehow limit the users generation and give a message for possible true users like "we are under a spam attack and the user generation is temporarily under restrictions, please try again later"
That would show the spammers, it is not worth to make such a try
That would show normal users, we take the protection of the site seriously and should not make a big deal to wait for a while until the situation goes back to normal. And if a user gets mad for it the wait... (remember one can read the site as a guest without user generation, login) then... screw him (most probably is going to be a "Gimme code ASAP, is URGENTZZ" user)
------------
4)
After such a massive user generation, spam wave coming from users that close to each other. A CP-Email asking for a user confirmation to all "still alive" users of that spam wave user range, if no confirmation in X time... user deletion.
this won't help against the spam wave, but at least will clean the mess up a bit
5)
A protector only button per forum to clean up ALL the "message closed" or "message automatically closed" or similar in that forum? This could help to keep the load reduced to only the active spam, making it easier and not so nasty to navigate the pages to report by the normal users. Right now, it is only possible with a staff's big hammer or you have to navigate between hundreds of those "closed" messages or delete them one by one as a protector (with the problem that after 1 deletion you get redirected to the first page of the forum and have to click back to that page to continue where you were)

If something has a solution... Why do we have to worry about?. If it has no solution... For what reason do we have to worry about?
Help me to understand what I'm saying, and I'll explain it better to you
Rating helpful answers is nice, but saying thanks can be even nicer.

Good ideas. On the other hand how many time such a thing happens. But of course you are right, it is a good idea to have better tools against future attacks.
It does not solve my Problem, but it answers my question

Yes because they have all been voted as spam. If you know someone with the required privileges (e.g MVP, Protector etc. e.g. @thatraja) who regularly uses that forum, you could ask them to delete the messages to clean it up.

Looks like only our admins have power to destroy "Message closed" threads.

I can do it, and as you and I are both Protectors I assumed we would have the same privileges. If they are still there tomorrow I may have a go at clearing them out - for a fee .

You right. I missed Delete button(at first) which comes only at mouse over thread. I'll clear both forums right now. Thank you

How are you doing ThatRaja? Came here after a long time and don't see the Indian Topics group. Is it discontinued?

I'm OK Ankur! Yeah, CP closed few forums(Chinese, Indian & Soapbox) last year. Unfortunately we can't have similar forum(GIT) anywhere again ever. It was good time.

Sorry for a very late reply. I was away from CP for quite long.
Yeah you are right! And I think that broke the links on your signature too.
