Well it's so easy to just change your display-name and email to something randomly generated. It's not as if you have any posting history here.

I know we all need unique names to create an account, but sometimes the Real Name (tm) is taken and we're left with options like putting numbers on the end to differentiate. Any chance of having a Real Name field in the profile, and if it's set display that instead of the User Name? Or maybe with the User Name in brackets?
That way, those of us unable to call ourselves our Real Name can still be display it proudly rather than hiding behind an alias or feeling like 2nd rate netizens with numbers after our name!

How can you guarantee that a user uses real name?

Keep your name in your signature?

The issue is one of spoofing. Someone can come along, name themselves after your kind, brave self, and then go around being a total idiot. A member's professional profile on CodeProject should be protected.

Chris, what he is talking about seems to be a 2nd optional field to give a real name. Say another Chris Maunder joins CP. His primary display name may be something like Chris Maunder2, but he can then add the optional field with Chris Maunder.

Yup, this is what I was trying to get at. Similar to Google Plus (first example that came to mind), it shows the Real Name and several people can have the same name.
Obviously everything's open to abuse (I could impersonate someone I'm not) - maybe a way to combat this would be to put the user's login name next to it / on a tooltip, or put the user's reputation (or an icon representing reputation) or 'member since ... ' in brackets.
eg
Chris Maunder ( ) - tooltip would show 'member since 2000'.
(pretend the smiley's a gold star or something!
And if someone's found to be trying to impersonate someone else, ban their account?
Not trying to create lots of extra work for the site admins, just thought it would be something beneficial for those of us unable to use our Real Name because someone else has claimed the account!

Yeah not everyone has unique names like Nish Sivakumar or Chris Maunder. So this will be a very handy feature

How about alerting a member that he has been mentioned in a message. It is like the one which seen in facebook and all. It would be a greater ( to my opinion) tool if someone wants to ping some to see the message or thread.

How would you suggest that is implemented.
If I said "POH" then people know who I mean, Pete O'Hanlon.
If I said "The Drunken Ocker" it would indicate Michael Martin.
#1 is Chris Maunder.
I am refered to as DD.
There are names, nicknames and insults that refer to people.

I have seen same functionality in facebook , while we mention others in message we gets an alert through mail.
In CP ,let the user gets alerted if the user's profile url is mentioned as a hyperlink in the message!
