Crowd sourcing is almost as quick as automated. Especially if you bestow 'Moderator' status to some trusted members.

Same here, except I tried it twice.

The description "how to use this forum" could use some expansion - if you add that the report should include a link to the spam and the spammer then it would help to provide better info for us lot to review and decide if we agree it is spam.
We do get reports where the link to the spammer is provided, but either without a link to the spam, or after the reporter has deleted the spam itself. This means we have to work on trust to an extent, which is not ideal, unfortunately, or the spammer gets another chance to spread his drivel.

There should be a way to dismiss all forum notifications without having to visit each link.
I think this is important because if you get the forum messages in the email, then you've already seen all the replies, and so you would want to dismiss the notifications.
The difficult we do right away...
...the impossible takes slightly longer.

There is a way - it's just not officially sanctioned..
If you're using Chrome or FireFox, it's as simple as a user javascript - known as an extension. It loads straight into chrome, though you need the grease monkey plugin for it to work in firefox. I've removed the code from the script as posted, but it's trivial to remove those ads at the top and bottom of the pages too.
The easiest way to load it is to:
- save the code as removeCPnotifications.user.js
- copy the folder address from the location bar of explorer
- paste it into the browser address bar
- click on removeCPnotifications.user.js
- click OK for the security warning
// ==UserScript==
// @name CodeProject userNotifications Remover
// @description Removes annoying CodeProject user-message notification
// @author enhzflep
// @match http://www.codeproject.com/*
// ==/UserScript==
function byId(e) {return document.getElementById(e);}
// id of <span> tag to remove: ctl00_ctl00_MemberMenu_Messages_NotificationDiv or ctl00_MemberMenu_Messages_NotificationDiv
// it seems the ID of the span changes from page to page. These are the only 2 variants I've seen so far.
function removeNotifications()
{
// Hide User replies notifications
var spelling1 = byId('ctl00_ctl00_MemberMenu_Messages_NotificationDiv');
var spelling2 = byId('ctl00_MemberMenu_Messages_NotificationDiv');
if (spelling1)
spelling1.style.visibility = 'hidden';
else if (spelling2)
spelling2.style.visibility = 'hidden';
}
//fires off the function to start with
removeNotifications();

I thought there was a "Mark all as read" button or something like that (on the page you go to if you click the number)...I'll check again when I get a notification.

Oh I see, yes. But I was saying there should be a way to dismiss them right from the popup.
Thanks for pointing this out.

Probably because of the content of one of the messages. Screenshot here.

You might try asking Red Gate, the makers of the program.... http://red-gate.com[^]
Why is common sense not common?

I looked at an article waiting for approval : http://www.codeproject.com/script/Articles/ArticleVersion.aspx?waid=26471&aid=426784[^] and saw a greyed comment headed "====== http://www.XcXlXoXtXhXeXsX8X.org ======" assuming this was spam, I opened it to report it as such. It opens ok, and you can read the whole message, but there is no Red Flag to report it with. The user account is "This account is no longer active", but the message remains.
That's a bit annoying - we can bin the spammer, but his spam remains behind!
(The Url is deliberately messed up - no point in giving spammers any more oxygen)

When receiving HTML formatted mail, the current styling (which seemed to change 6-8 weeks ago) does not take into account that some people do not have a default white background. Myself, I have a blue background - so now the mail messages have a few lines of white background with black text interspersed with blue background. Oh, and blue background various places around various tables. Not pretty. Not easy to read.

The email from this message looked fine, but today's daily news was still a mix of background colors.
