Every time my webpage is refresh

My Webpage is Refreshing, When Some Process is doing. So I am using update panel. But I am not clearly about update panel. Please Give details for using update panel. I am using display message box for this code

Response.Write("<script>alert('"+msg+"')</script>");

But this is not display When I am using update panel. Please Give me anyother method for displaying message box. Please help me, thank u.
