Hey I use Inspieron 1720

I have installed Window 7 without any problem at all.

What is your Inspiron model Number?

  1. Buy a copy of Windows 7 (this step is not optional)
  2. Make a note of any third party software you have installed and ensure you have the installation media, or install zip files
  3. backup all your data to an external source, HDD, DVD etc. This step is optional, but highly recommended
  4. Install Windows 7 on the laptop
  5. reinstall your third party software programs
  6. restore your data from the previous backup

maybe he should set in het BIOS that he can boot from CD as first boot device

I was assuming that install would be done from a running system so you do not need to change any boot settings.

Be aware that on branded computer, there are generally a few extra softwares that are installed and some of them might be required for example to handle some special keys on the keyboard. This could be particulary important if things like volume or CD tray is handled by software only.

I have successfully upgraded a Dell laptop (following the above rules) from Windows XP to Vista and then to Windows 7 without any problems.

Thankx man :)....I already talked to Dell...but it is too expexsive for me to install new OS from Dell service centre...so I didn't do it...
I don't know as it is not permitted to be done.

But I may have a few suggestions. First remove any unnecessary external hardware when updating as it might be one of the peripherical that prevent the upgrading to be done.

I have saw a case where the installation on Windows 7 has failed because of an external hard drive. The installatin bagan but at some point, the installation was cancelled and the system roll back to the previous OS (which was Windows XP).

If you can find a way to do an upgrade, then if it fails, the system will probably automatically roll back to Vista.

On the other hand, if the upgarde does not works on your system, then depending on the reason it might not works anyway even if you start from a formatted hard drive.

Have you check if your system is compatible with Windows 7 using Microsoft tool for that?

Is it really work???? because i can't take any risk...hope u understands...

Don't do this, you will lose all your data.

If you don't want to take any risk, then one suggestion would be to buy another hard-drive and install the OS on the new hard drive. If anything goes wrong, you can easily reinstall the existing drive.

In the worst case, you can always reinstall the original OS. If necessary, you can create the recovery DVD just in case.

By the way, it is not easy to format the hard drive as it is used by Windows. You typically have to format it using another computer or booting another OS. Maybe, if you both from the DVD, you have the option...
