can anyone suggest an alternative programmatic method that would allow

Probably not. Imagine what would happen if some not-very-nice people decided to create LOTS of accounts. I haven't tried it, but I would guess there's a CAPTCHA or something similar to make accounts belong to humans.

Solution 1

Both FaceBook and Twitter have CAPTCHAs in the registration pages. So I believe you cannot do it programatically.

No it is not possible because CAPTCHAs is a security program which check the presence of user through run-time code.
