Hi,all! I am a student from China. Here I just want to ask for a help like the subject. I really want to learn programing but I am faced with some difficulties such as no teacher, so I see if I want to make a difference in the field, I must learn learn and learn. So please help me.
P.S. This is my first time to login in a foreign website,and it's a little different from ours. Another aspect is my poor English.I must say sorry here! If you can help me,please send an E-mail ,[Email removed]. Thanks again!

Have any email address for me?or do you use MSN,facebook and so on?To be honesy,I just have a QQ number,which may be strange to you but very popular in China. I really want to have a native Englishspeaking friend.not too soon,I will have an exam,band 4 for college students,which in my view is not so difficult for me.Passing does not mean you have conquered English.Exams always make us sick,but we have to face them.But also it's a chance for me to master a language,like language C/c++.so I need your help.I attempted to show my appreciation via using chinese characters,but there is a limit of input.so just a phonetic transcription instead, 'xie xie ni men'

Reading novels to develop my English?I am afraid I do not think so!My goal is to speak good English,not to be able to read English stories.Maybe my point is not so ture,but I must face the fact that I don't like reading,even Chinese articles or novels.I don't want to own dumb English which means you cannot speak a word.
Another problem is ,I don't have facebook.But ,maybe I should get one someday.

Oddly enough, I learned most of my english reading novels... it was a pleasant way of learning - obviously it's not for everybody :)

I will follow you!I major in Mechanical & Electrical Engineering in college now.I had a teacher last term.now the course is over coupled with no teacher ,which is so sad!

Might not be good places to start with - but it's a good idea to get to know these projects somewhere along the road :)

Don't be afraid. If you're getting most fundamental engineering skill, you know what is it: ability to teach yourself and learn from literature and other sources. Only don't fall into a common engineering mistake: learning only "just to solve the problem". Try to get fundamental knowledge, which is much easier now than when I started, without Internet at all.

I suggest you fix your profile to reflect this. So I see the problem is that you're from China.

I have leaved several years in US and know many people from China; most of them speak English much worse the other immigrants. Some say this is because languages are very different, but I know more serious reason: China is a huge nation. Problem learning languages is a syndrome of big nations. Russian is much close to English in origins (same family), nevertheless so many Russians know English remarkably poorly after some 8 (!) years of English in school+university. This is because they think this is a big deal and afraid of learning. Compare with citizens of Soviet Union native of Middle Asia; some would say: "my native is Uzbek (which is Turkic language), I know some Tadjik (which is of so called Indo-European language, close to Persian), and I know decent Russian. Now, what's English? Just yes another language, pretty simple one. In contrast, ethnic Russians, even those who were born in "national" republics tends to ignore local languages. For them, learning language at school is something extraordinary. Many learn languages at school but don't speak. Even Americans learn languages easier I as can see, despite the fact that most Americans never learn any foreign language, which is impossible in Russia. My University requires good Russian at the moment of entering and very seriously learning two Western languages or one Western and Japanese during the course. Even there many did not really speak before they started to meet foreign scientists and travel abroad.

Big nation -- that explains it all. Try to "forget" the imprinted attitude of the member of big nations; and a foreign language will go much easier.

Thank you,but I never have it in mind that I am a member of big nations.As we all know that English is an international language.English is powerful,and if you want to be expert in a field ,you must know english well 'cause many books are written in English.In fact I also have been learning it for 7 years.Maybe I can kown someting in english,such as reading some books,doing some papers,understanding the meaning of your comments here,but when I have an oral english exam,I am always nervous.I listen to tapes, VOA for example,frequently when I am in school.It seems of no use.Just listening doesn't work at all unless coupled with talking with someone.But I cannot have access to a chance to talking with a foreigner though there are teachers(foreign tachers are for the students of English major) in my scool .
Also I can learn a lot form the site via comment-to-comment commuciation.I will try my best to learn,maybe I can have a girlfriend from your country oneday.

"My" country is in fact Russia. If I understand just a bit of Chinese history (which is really difficult), it's was always based on the view of China as the center of the Universe. As China was conquered many times, the government and upper classes always returned to Chinese traditions and culture sooner or later. Even new Russian state institutions shaped during 13-14 centuries under the strong influence of dominating Mongol Gold Horde was based on many institutions from administration of Yelü Chucai (Chinese: 耶律楚材) who established them during his service as a top-rank minister of Mongol Empire, such as taxes, post-office, state official ranks and a lot more.

You can recognize the role of other languages, but the predominant attitude for learning foreign languages as something that effects learning, as I tried to describe.

The big part of power of English is its relative simplicity -- almost everything excluding orthography, which is kind of irrational due to historical reasons. By the way, your written English is pretty nice and correct, to my taste. Please to read it, especially in contrast to mane inquirers using "textspeak". (Why, why the best and most helpful experts mostly try to use decent and accurate language, but inquirers allow themselves to use "textspeak" and never spellcheck?) (Well, almost. Would you pay attention for punctuation: blank space after punctuation signs.)
