For future readers: We have decided to slowly migrate to the newer version of Visual Studio. We did not want to force matters by hunting for PSDK from February 2003.

Because winhttp is a high level API you MUST include the standard windows header at first .

I have done that at the very start, that is not the cause of the problem. :(

Set the sdk search path at the last position to avoid collisions.

Did that, but still got problems...

And you must include the winhttp.lib file on the linker tabs.

But using WaitForSingleObject() always with a timeout of zero is useless. You can use the event state or GetOverlappedResult() instead to check if there was a directory change.

I do not use WaitForSingleObject anymore, my solution applies the edited part of the accepted answer (look at the bottom of the answer).

I am sorry for the confusion. In order to explain, please look at the code snippet from the INTRODUCTION.

I have action that needs to be performed always, foo(); in the snippet.

If ReadDirectoryChangesW() fills buffer, then I perform processBuffer(...) otherwise loop must continue.

Your solution blocks the loop until IO is finished and that is the problem.

When there is no data, or IO hasn't finished yet, I can not wait. I must continue the loop, executing foo().

During looping I must somehow determine IO finished, and then processBuffer(...). This is where GetOverlappedResult(...) comes into play.

I hope things are clear now, otherwise leave a comment.

While there is no directory change (no IO), the call is pending and you can wait.

I keep telling you, I can not wait for IO to finish. If there is no data I must continue with the loop. This is the part that confuses me.

Loop must work continuously, if there is no data in the buffer I can not wait for IO to finish, I must move on.

If IO is pending, my loop must continue executing and determine "on the fly" when IO finished (and process the result afterwards).

How many extra lines are you seeing in the output file? Roughly 10% of the file size. After examining file, I have found out that file is filled with \r\r\n instead with \n. I am receiving bytes and am planning to dump them to a binary file. There is no need for terminating NULL, in my humble opinion.

You are clearing the buffer actually after receiving but not before the first time.

Similarly, don't "over decorate" your names: "Answers.Text" is clearer than "Answers.TextOfTheAnswer" - and the same for the Questions.

Don't call them "correct" and "wrong": call them AnswerA, Answer B, ... and have a separate column which holds the "right" ID. That way, you can insert the "Right" answer in any column and that makes it easier to show them - the right answer isn't always the first!

It's not really worth trying to force the system to disallow combinations at the DB level - this is really a "higher level" function, and should be done in your C# code where it's A) easier, and B) more logical. Why should the DB know that some combinations are forbidden?

First off, why BIGINT? How many questions are you planning of having?

I guess I did went overboard... Number of questions is 20.

Second, why have a bit associated with each answer which says "this is the right one"?
The way I'd do it is to have a "CorrectAnswer" ID as part of the question, and I'd remove the link from the answer to the question, replacing it with three indexes to Answers.

I agree on moving the "correct answer" id to the question table, but I do not understand what you have meant by "remove the link from the answer to the question, replacing it with three indexes to Answers." I do not know how to achieve this, can you please clarify?

I'd also add another table linking Player, question, and answer given - so that you have a means of recording his results.

It seems that you pass NULL as lParam to your CreateDialogParam().

Maybe you have forgotten to pass a structure?

In your WM_INITDIALOG you should convert lParam to that structure and use it the way you want.

That is the purpose of CreateDialogParam right?

I thought of using volatile boolean variable, which I would declare in dialog box, and send to thread as parameter to CreateThread.

Then, thread could do his job in a while loop, waiting for boolean to be true, or exiting when automation is finished finished.

So far, I am rewriting thread code to execute query from there. Since I use pure Win32 API, I can pass as a parameter to CreateThread a structure that has HWND and an integer which is a primary key. That way GUI will not be touched at all, and I could start to code messages as you have suggested.

Just bear with me for a moment:

Since I need to fill Word with data from database, I think that I can directly query the database instead of collecting values from dialog box.

That way I would follow the rule of "not touching GUI".

I could pass primary key as a parameter to CreateThread, since that is all that I need to execute query that fills Word.

This would be my first step, aborting thread would be implemented after I successfully do this.

I think that this is the best way for me to start solving this, since there is a lot of work waiting me.

Well, the user can use combo box to load information about another object while Word is being filled.

Also, he/she can minimize dialog box and activate other features of the main GUI, since there are other buttons that activate some other dialog boxes as well.

As for the task duration, well, document is small, it takes around 30 to 60 seconds to fill it.

Dialog box has combo box with the list of buildings, which information can be showed in Word document.

In order to allow user to work on something else, while Word is being populated, I've decided to use threads.

I have tried posting code, but it failed, since the code is quite long.

I will try to explain what I did:

Dialog box should present the user data from a database, when created.

After user clicks on print button, filled Word document should pop up as a result.

To do this I have made a thread function that has a HWND of a dialog box as a parameter ( see the above snippet for TabelaSvihObjekata to see what I am talking about ).

Then, I use OLE Automation to open word document and populate it with the data from dialog box with following method:

Since dialog has edit controls, I retrieve their text in worker thread via call to GedDlgItemText API.

Then I write the data into word using OLE Automation.

The reason why I couldn't see any nodes in my tree view after subclassing it, is because additional messages must be handled in order for my subclassing procedure to work properly. That is the answer to my question: Why can't I see tree view's nodes when I subclass it this way ?

List which language/platform/library... you use, and it would be also good for them to see a snippet of code if you tried something to do about your problem.

But I thought that TransparentBlt API does the same thing as BitBlt, and makes chosen color transparent.

My tree's background IS transparent when I subclass it this way, but I CAN NOT SEE ANY NODES. That is the problem!

Those nodes that have symbol [] next to them can be checked/unchecked, and those nodes with symbol + can't be checked/unchecked.

I don't want to waste your time, explaining why it must be this way, but it must.

To simplify : nodes with child nodes have only + next to them, single nodes have checkbox next to them.

I have a button that saves data into database when pressed.
In that button handler, this is what I try to do:
First I add data to main table-primary key ( which is AUTONUMBER ) and other stuff.
Then, I need to add that table's primary key to child table, since that primary key is a foreign key in the child table.

That's the issue:
SQL allows to insert data OR primary key, separately, yet I need to do it in one command.

To clarify things with small example:

When user clicks on a button, first insert data for main table.
Then insert data for child table.

That's it.

But I don't know how to insert BOTH foreign key and other relevant data into child table.

Again, a small snippet:

When I push a button, in that variable should be stored the content of the edit control, and that content should be added to the vector.

I thought to do that by filling global variable with GetDlgItemText(), and then just to add that variable's text into vector.

Well, from your comment I have concluded that I should do it with following steps:

1.) Creating compatible DC;
2.) Creating compatible bitmap;
3.) Drawing everything on bitmap;
4.) StretchBlt bitmap;

If so, I could use some code examples...

So, instead of painting directly into HDC returned from BeginPaint( .. ), I should treat it as any other bitmap, and use the same method ?

Well, I did hardcoded the path for my database in connection string like this:
" C:\\ MyBase.accdb "
but, after changing it to read from my USB ( F:\\ ... ) it worked !

The bitmaps I have are made in paint, or were converted online from PNG.

They look fine when my buttons are small, but bad when size of the button is increased.

I would be satisfied with the solution you suggested: changing the quality of the bitmaps, thus, leaving my code untouched.

I don't understand the question, so let me try to clarify my post:

I have a static control that sends notification when single clicked.
At that point, a menu should appear just below static control's frame.
I've been experimenting myself, and I think Richard was right.
I am currently struggling with x and y positions, but hopefully I will manage it.

I have made a static control, and sized it properly to fit. Also, by handling WM_CTLCOLORSTATIC properly, I have managed to set blue background.
Instead of buttons, I will use static controls with styles SS_NOTIFY and SS_ICON set.
That is the problematic part:

I have posted the same question in " Quick Answers " section, but got no luck so far.
Perhaps you can help, so I can mark your answer as solution to my question ?

I have fixed the issue, everything works fine.
I have used static controls, instead of buttons.
Now all I need to do, is figure out how to process their messages.
Since they are children of a static control, I guess their messages are sent to it ( parent static control ), instead to main window.

How do I change above behavior so that child static controls send their notifications to main window, instead to their parent static control ?

I do not try to be imprecise, I am just inexperienced, and to be honest, a bit scared, so I guess I have started to panic a little.
This is my first time that somebody asked me to do something like this, and I just do not know how to handle it.

Bitmap's size is 152 x 152, and I have passed the same values in CreateWindowEx() for length and width, so button's dimensions can be the same as bitmap's.
The image displays properly but there is some flicker involved, in view that horizontal stripes appear from time to time, after the button is clicked.
Again, I am sorry, I didn't intend to make confusion.

I have done it, and MS VISUAL C++ reported error by spawning new window with following information:

I must say that I didn't expect that... Any ideas?

Perhaps this set of information could shed some light:

- Bitmaps were made in Paint, and are large, in my oppinion;

- Button's dimensions are large;

- Button is created in WM_CREATE via CreateWindowEx( .. );

- Button has BS_BITMAP style;

- Bitmap is set in WM_CREATE just after button is created ( with BM_SETIMAGE message );

- I haven't handled WM_CTLCOLORBTN message;

Hope that this will help you to provide some useful advice since I am not that experienced, and just can't figure this out.

As for double buffering part, should I try using it to paint buttons in response to WM_PAINT or maybe is the best idea to owner draw button?

After I click on it, infrequent flicker appears in view of few thin horizontal lines colored with the background color of a button.

Well, there is other way.
I can use DrawIcon(..) function, and it draws icon perfectly ( icon has transparent background).
The reason I wanted static control with that icon was to process the STN_DBLCLK message.
My client wanted double click on a picture to create certain event, and that is the problem for me, since icons do not send messages.
This could be a good substitute for static control if there is a way to simulate icon sending STN_DBLCLK message.
Any thoughts?

The background of my window is a bitmap image.
When I set style SS_WHITERECT the static control is drawn with black frame, without icon, but its background is the same as the part of the bitmap static control's rectangle occupies.
That was my point:
To draw icon in static control, but its background is the same as the part of the bitmap it is placed at.
I am sorry if I was vague and hope that this clarified things now.
To help further, it should have the same effect as result of the DrawIcon() function : on the background of the main window, which is bitmap, an icon is drawn without its background color.

After handling WM_SIZE with InvalidateRect(hwnd,NULL,FALSE); things worked for 2 or 3 minimizes/maximizes.
Then the background turned to white.

I have created the same query in MS ACCESS(the project uses MS ACCESS database) and the result is the same.

I get cartesian product.

I think that the result is correct and that my professor has made the mistake.

After typing "select name,salary from A,B;" the logical result should be cartesian product.

Can someone confirm that the only way to avoid cartesian product is with WHERE-clause insertion, described by nv3 bellow?

It works great until i get range like "A1:AA10",then there is more columns in excel then there actually are,and those extra columns are filled with "N/A".

It must be something with the math in the function toBase26...

I have made the UNICODE version above,and added int fCol=5, fRow=5; and changed call to makeRangeStr().

It prints E5:L20 so i guess it works...

Still I have issues in my program,but as soon as I solve them I will post again!

Pass number of columns,not (number of columns-1).

2.)

converted = (wchar_t)(--remainder + 'A') + converted; //first substract remainder by 1!

After these slight changes,on paper,seems that it works fine.

My program doesn't support UNICODE,so I have compiler issues with your code:)
