Thanks, we did build our own list, wikipedia actually has really good articles on names, eg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabic_name and many others. These include the full unicode versions, so perfect.

The contents of the SRC are meant to be passed verbatim to the HTTP server and it returns the resource. There is no requirement for extensions per-se, so long as the http server understands what you are doing. We actually use this (server side) to select graphic formats based on what the client browser can support - so asking for "pencil" may return png, gif, jpg etc depending on target device.
This will explain why browsing to the file doesnt work - browser just asks for "pencil" which isnt a valid file in current path. However, I dont understand why FF, IE use PNG and CH, OP, SF are using JPEG for same Http Server.
