Thanks, what is missing that would make this a five? This tip is almost 2 years old now, so I'm sure you're aware of the features mentioned, but they were new to the IDE when it was released. If you're open to posting some suggestions I'd be happy to update!

Neither will impact performance, but I find jQuery UI easier to set up - especially with MVC. You can find plenty of examples on each and see which code fits your style best. Performance will again be something that you will have to deal with. I did run into a library called something like 'monorails.js' that has a 250ms delay on the client that could not be configured. The Ajax toolkit and the jQuery UI don't have such limitations. Cheers.

You don't want to do this. The user accessing the URL is absolutely no different from the browser accessing the URL. If you block access to the URL for the CSS, no one will see your CSS. If you want to make it hard to view try minifying your CSS, or use one of the progressing CSS compilers. Cheers.

I'm sorry, esmailian, you're trying to do something that is designed not to happen here. Can you not figure a different approach? If the file is locked, it's locked. The OS won't let you carry the operation out. EF is not going to enable you to do this. You will likely need to write some really low level unmanaged code to do this.
Edit: read new answer below for one possible option. /eatingCrow

First of all, you'll need to put id attributes in your elements. <td id="nba"> for example. Then you can use jQuery to get a handle on that element ($("#nba").hover() would work). You can then do whatever you want - write animations, swap graphics - in the hover method. There is an 'in' part and an 'out ' part. The docs are here:

If the state variables are int currentItemsPerPage, int CategoryId, int OrderById then why not store them in hidden inputs and grab them with script? You can pass in json objects to your action, so create some classes (like SearchOptions) and then pass the data into the controller using json notation (also fairly easy with jQuery). As I said earlier, model binding kicks in and your objects are hydrated. I'm not sure I get why you're trying to access the state variables from the master page...this doesn't smell like MVC here. Remember that you have layouts, not master pages, and you don't really want to push functionality up the stack there. If you have a search controller, think of that search box as a little piece of client UI that collects something to submit to your search controller. It's actually a lot simpler than trying to push the model back up the layout engine.

TheyCallMeMrJames
12-Aug-11 9:12am

No, that's valid, in the sense that it accomplishes what you're looking for (+5 as I actually haven't attempted to invoke the action like that before). But do be mindful that when you're working around a framework to make something work, that it's usually a good time to spend some thought as to why it doesn't work like that in the first place. In this case, it may very well be that your controllers/actions need a rethink (or it may mean that your solution is the best/easiest route to meet your needs).

You're only saying it's irrelevant because you're operating under the assumption that the work is impossible. I'm certain it's not. While not by any means trivial, it's definitely doable and already exists, and it's not too far gone to suggest plausible starting points.

Yeah, it was my vote of 3, but only because I see it as a comment and not a solution. It would have been a 5 of a comment, though ;o).
We don't know many factors:
1) Is this any random photo, or posed?
2) What are the lighting conditions?
3) Is the person looking at the camera?
All of these things, plus complications like hair, make it difficult to know whether or not it's plausible.
Here's a reality, though: you can walk into my local Walmart, step up to a kiosk in cosmetics and alter your hair style, hair color and make up. If you're into that.
The kiosk gives instructions on where to stand, how to line up, and to move your hair out of the way of your face.
Given the question above, that's immediately where my mind went...a department store kiosk. But you can see that, given my response, I still made it clear that the solution would be 'heavy lifting' and 'magic'. Magic == good innovation == hard work.
Cheers.

Hi again,
I am actually saying that it ISN'T the UI that will be hitting the database. MVC is a VERY different style of development from Page Controller (ASPX), and there isn't an event model as you're used to.
Take an hour or so and watch this video: http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/DevDays/DevDays-2011-Netherlands/Devdays002
It will definitely get you moving in the right direction.

Model-View-Controller - MVC is a framework that allows you to create the entitles that you want to work with, the presentation that you wish to display and the functionality that binds them together in separate development areas. Because of it's implementation, it also makes it very easy to work with client-side javascript libraries rendering tasks like your fairly trivial. The post in my answer above is part of a series on ASP.NET MVC and jQuery and accomplishes what you are looking for. Cheers.

For example, make sure you're using a user instance and not tied to an instance of SQL Express. You'll want to take steps (perhaps) to protect/encrypt your connection string. Verify your dependencies to make sure the appropriate DLLs are referenced in your install package and, of course, do a test deployment. Make sure that your MDF is included in the install, and make sure that you have a strategy to update the MDF and/or migrate data to new versions down the road, otherwise you risk overwriting their data.

It won't add load, per se, but if the objects are big they will consume memory. Your options are basically to keep the objects in memory, or persist them somehow (disk, database). If you persist them, you get your memory back, but then have the expense of writing/reading to disk or a database. (There are other factors based on scale, but you can definitely start here.)
If you have an object that is created for a user, used throughout the time they are on the site, and needs to be associated only to one user, then session state is where you want the data.
Hope this helps! ...and hey, thanks for the vote! ;o)
Cheers.

"Input String was not in correct format" means that when you tried to parse the int it failed. Check out the tryparse method I suggested above, as it gives you a fail-case that lets you default in a value (like 0) if you need to.

That would definitely work. The easiest approach might be to write the javascript with some of the data baked in to get it working. Then, move to generate the javascript server-side in your aspx page. That way you could write a loop, or a page method (or whatever turns your crank) to generate the data string needed for the client script.
Cheers.

What have you done to try to work through this? Can you try removing the component from the form? What about commenting out code that references it? Have you checked to make sure methods that are accessing it aren't firing before the control is created? I suggest setting some breakpoints, possibly setup a spike project to replicate the error and researching a little more...not much to go off of here.

If I recall correctly, the TextBox won't fire it's event until the user leaves the control. There may be a way to get that firing otherwise. Can you tab out and see if that does it? Hey there, you're going to need to work out a more solid request before anyone can help you. What application are you trying to manage? How is it addressed? No, I don't think that's the right fit then. But on to the problem at hand...let's double check a couple of things here. Is the textbox in the updatepanel? Do you have a server-side event ready-and-waiting? Have you set a breakpoint to see if the postback is happening, but you're hitting an error in the Ajax call? Maybe update your question with some of those responses and we'll see where we get to. Cheers!

You can register a domain name with any registrar. What country do you live in? In North American countries we tend to us GoDaddy.com a fair bit. Network Solutions is another. Most will advertise, so just google "domain registration" and you'll find something. Before you chase that, you should make sure your ISP will support rDNS or you'll be wasting your money.

Actually, you'll have to manage the session on the server side, but you'll use the client script to make a call to a back-end function...THAT'S where you'll set/check the flag. If you re-read the above post thinking of all session management on the server side, controlled by script calls from the client, you should be rolling. Cheers.
