SelectedValue is always a string it's implicitly converted by the control. Interestingly, if I ignore the error it seems to work properly. As you can see in the code, I ADD the unknown entry to the dropdown after binding. If binding had really been unsuccessful I should end up with 2 entries when it fails. I don't. Gah! It's sentient!
