Keep it going, Brian. Congrats on the home. Mowing the grass and all those other chores are all good activities to keeping fit, once you've reached your goals.
Any word from Terry and how his efforts are going?

Thanks, Chris!
If nothing else, day to day living takes twice the moving around than it did in my 1-bedroom apt.
I sent Terry an email, but haven't heard anything lately. He doesn't seem to be posting much either. Hope he's doing alright.
Colin Angus Mackay has been shaking off some padding too. He's been writing his progress on his bio page.

I did gain a pound, but I had a great vacation this week visiting my brother for the fourth of July weekend. Plenty of good eats, beer, and good times. What diet??
I did get some hiking, swimming, and running in, but apparently not enough. Oh well, I'll catch up this week. Honest.
Today does mark 5 smoke free days however. So overall I'm ahead for the week.

Well done on the smoke free days!
And because you were celebrating your Independence Day I think a little holiday is okay.
I walked almost 10 miles this week. (A 5.5 mile walk to skip two train stations [it took an hour an a half what normally takes 8 minutes on the train] on Tuesday and a 4.5 mile walk to my parents house on Thursday), but it doesn't seem to have done much - We'll see on Monday.

I skipped a week, but obviously not much progress has been made. I sort of fell out of the exercise/losing weight routine for a bit. It's been raining just about every night after work, so I went about 2 weeks or so without any exercise. The weathers just a lame excuse as the was really plenty of time to get out, but I didn't and managed to sort of maintain my weight, but could tell it was creeping back on slowly.
So last week I went out for a jog, and was happy, both with the distance (.5 miles + 2 quarter mile stretches) and how I felt afterwards.
I know a half mile isn't much to brag about, but a few months ago, I couldn't even go 1/10 of a mile without collapsing into a heap on the ground. I can now actually see myself jogging a mile at a stretch soon.
Anyway, having poked back into the 250's last week, I'm back down into the 240's and motivated again to continue.

Zig Ziglar in his book See You At The Top tells the story about how he reduced his weight and became a lot fitter. He said that the first time he went out running he managed to run a block. The next night a block and a mail box, the third night a block and two mail boxes. Now, and this is where he apologieses for bragging, but I think he deserves it, he can stay on the tredmill longer than any member of the NFL and he's in his 60s [it was the revised edition of the book - the original edition he wrote in his 40s as he was starting to become fitter]. So, perceverance is all it takes. Keep heading towards your goal and you'll get there sooner than you think.

Great! Another tip from Zig is that - as he often had to travel for business and sometimes the hotel didn't have a gym, is was snowing out side, or whatever - all he did was jog on the spot in his room.
I bought an excersise bike so I don't have an excuse. So I better get on it...
Have a great week.

Dropped down another 2. The strange thing about this week is that I did no exercise. At all. I know that won't happen too often, so I'm planning on getting myself back walking this evening.
This week puts the first tens digit into the loss column.

Hey Brian!
247 sounds pretty good. I can't wait until I hit that number. I am down to 271.
Heck - I may quit at 247. I'm just not sure I can hit 200 again. I am looking at myself now and seeing the difference that losing 40 pounds made and I just don't see where 70 more pounds can come from and not have me looking like a famine victim
I'll keep plugging away and congratulations!!!!

Hey! That's great!
Maybe I should do something similar. I would love to exchange my beer barrel for a six pack. I tried earlier this year and I lost a few kilos, but I put it back again. Announcing your triumphs to the world is fantastic. You kind of have to put in on your self to have a triumph to shout about each Monday.
Keep up the terrific work.

It does add some pressure to have progress to report on Mondays. I still have a ways to go, but I already fell much better, and even got a few nice words from the ladies.

Always a bonus!
I kind of borrowed your idea also. I've started a Monday morning report. I'm currently 208lbs (94.6kg) but I'm not all that tall so the top end of the normal range for my height is 170lbs (77.5kg) so that is where I want to be at the end of my journey. Either that or five inches taller.

What a difference a digit makes! 249 today folks.
Down below 250!!
I don't even feel like it's any effort. If I can maintain 1-2 lbs. a week I'll be happy.

Congrats!!!!!
It feels a lot more real when you are down to a new ten's-place doesn't it?
Getting below 300 was a real pleasure for me and I'm guessing that 250 for you was that same, seemingly unbreakable, barrier.
1-2 pounds a week is good progress and you said the magic words - it doesn't feel like an effort.
You are probably adding to your life every day you continue your progress.

One single lonely pound has left me. I'll miss the little bugger, though he was headstrong and lazy.
Though I'd certainly like to be losing as fast as Terry is, I'm happy with the consistency, and feel confident that the changes I'm making are long term.
I'm enjoying my bike rides more and my walks are turning into jogs piece by piece.
I need to get a tune-up on my bike, though. It's not cooperating everytime I want to switch gears. Nothing worse than pedaling uphill and having your shifter give you the finger when you flip to new a gear and you're trying to keep cadence.
I'll tell you after my lame 6 mile rides, the athletes riding Tour de France have all my respect.
As an aside, I'd also like to take a moment to remember and thank all those who have fallen on this Memorial Day.

Hey! You made it to your original "starting weight"
250 is a good number but when you drop down to the 240s it will feel like a lot more than 1 pound!
I fell off the wagon a bit this week with the weekend parties starting Thursday night.
The good news is I only gained 1 pound!
I hope to lose 5 by next monday.

I'm a firm believer in yearly tune-ups at the local bike shop. Where I live they run between $35 and $50. They include adjusting cables (your shifter problem), checking/replacing brake pads, retaping handlebars, and that sort of thing. Parts are usually extra.
What sort of bike do you have? I ride a Trek 1220, which is an older version of this[^].

I just have an old Schwinn Badlands. An entry level mountain bike. I do only street riding now, and will definitely look into buying a street bike if I continue riding. I wonder if I could just get street tires as intermediate and cheaper step to get a better ride.
Do you know if brake pads deteriorate much over the years? They aren't worn down, but I haven't ridden at all in the past 4-5 years, and keep picturing the pads breaking apart one day.

The first bike I bought with my own money was a Schwinn Speedster. I saved the money from my paper route for months. I still have it, hanging from hooks in my garage; I just can't bear to part with it.
brianwelsch wrote:

Probably not. You would need to replace the wheels to put road tires on, and that's more involved (and more expensive) than the benefit you would get. A better long term approach might be to look at a hybrid bike. Hybrids have the mountain bike riding position (fairly upright), but have narrower tires and more 'roadish' gear sets. When I started riding, I rode a Trek 700 for a couple of years. I bought it new for about $240, and sold it for $150. Hybrids are nice for casual and fitness riding, and can handle a little 'off road' riding if you're into that. They're more comfortable for people who don't like (or whose backs can't handle) the more prone position of a road bike. They also tend to be more forgiving on variable surfaces (in town: gravel parking lots, curbs, and the like).
brianwelsch wrote:

If you get your current bike tuned-up at a bike shop, they can check the pads and recommend if they need replacing. Of course they do wear, but I don't think storage or age would hurt them.
If the bike has been stored any length of time, or is fairly old, you may need to replace the tires. Tire rubber tends to deteriorate over time, especially if the bike has seen extremes of temperature. One way to check is to deflate the tires most of the way. If you pinch the tire, and you see lots of hairline cracks (along tread lines especially), that's a good sign it's time to replace them. Mountain bike tires can get away with a lot more of this condition than road bikes, since the tires are thicker and run at lower pressure.
Good luck, and keep us informed of your progress.

Woohoo! 2 more pounds gone! This is getting fun. If I could have, I would've given myself a high-five this morning, instead I pumped my fist into the air and said "Yeahhh!"
Then I turned and looked at my big all-teeth-bearing grin in the mirror, and told myself what a dork I was.
I didn't exercise so much this week, but I ate only when I was hungry. Novel thought isn't it?
Though I feel I could easily lapse into old eating habits at this point, I also think it wouldn't be too difficult to keep up the new habits, and better still improve upon them.
I hope Terry saw another successful week as well.

We are all dorks here and that's a good thing! DORKS RULE
brianwelsch wrote:

It actually goes against our evolution - we are a species who has always been starving and constantly searching for that next meal - pigging out on the lucky days when we had food and going hungry for the days we had none took us up to only an eyeblink ago on an evolutionary timescale.
So it really is a novel idea! But it is also a very smart idea. Even better is to do the mind numbing daily calorie allotment and plan out your meals and eat on schedule. I use a modified version of this - I skip a scheduled meal if not hungry, but refuse to eat in-between if I am hungry. I'll wait to the next shceduled meal and eat only thet - even if it is just a small plate of salad. After being fed your hunger shuts off after 15 minutes or so.
It is also really good to force water through you all day long. At least a gallon every day. It keeps your kidneys efficient and able to filter your blood properly - otherwise the liver picks up part of the load and its bile-production capacities are diminished so your food doesn't get digested as well and all sorts of unpleseant things occur.
Constant water drinking also burns calories. You get no calories from the water, but your kidneys burn calories and if the water is cold you also burn calories just from the heat transfer of getting the ice-cold water up to body temperature.
So drink a gallon or more every day!!!!
I am down to 279. This makes 32 pounds gone in 54 days. 79 more to go!
Good job on your steady progress!!!!

TWO ** pant * HUNDRED * gasp * FIFTY * wheez *** THREE
Clocked in a good 25 miles of walking and cycling this week. It's been a blast! It's amazing how different my view of the neighbor has become since travelling around without a car. Meeting people, taking in the smells and sounds, it's really cool.
I did a much better job of sticking to my diet this week, I'm happy to say. Those SlimFast shakes, while by no means as delicious as sugar encrusted deep-fried apple pastries, go down easily.
I feel bad now if I don't do exercise every day, and my energy level overall is going up. Man, I should started this years ago.
