In some cases you can profit from people stealing your software... just have a look at Microsoft. Most personal computers use Windows, many of them don't have a license. But exactly that fact makes Microsoft the market leader... almost like giving drugs to someone to make him addicted. That's probably the reason why Microsoft didn't care about software protection for the last decades.
So many people stealing your software will contribute to the name recognition of your work.
Don't try it, just do it!

the best is when the software is on the server and that the people is running it from there.
The only thing they can get is the HTML output.
They gain benefit from frequent update and since everything is centralized, we can make sure they are paying for it.
I try to put everything solutions in a web based solution if it's possible.
Otherwise, people will most likely succeed in cracking your software.
If someone says "Die mortal!", don't stay to see if he isn't.

The product on which I work is a test and measurement product the code controls hardware provided by my company. It can be installed on any PC, but only useful as a simulator at that point.

I guess to keep things simple the good old registration serial still works the best, from a end users perspective, but price plays an important role as it will determine what type of protection should be used in the system.
As we all know by now we cant protect software with dongles and registration key/pair reverse engineering will always come into play all we can do is make the game hard and at the same time keep the end user happy.
Before we can buld something better we need to reverse engineer.

Our main application currently runs on an embedded system, whose hardware is $1Mio, so I suppose that should be good enough as a dongle.

I would definitely go for honesty.
Why?
Because until the people are honest and themselves avoid piracy, no matter what copy protection u use, some day some one will definitely break it.

Trust... but verify.
My code is freely given, I've had at least 4 different groups try to simply change all the names to theirs and pass it off as their code. But it shows up rapidly when they cannot support it, they demand I make my code easier to understand (it is well documented, but I have some... interesting math), so that they can sell it as theirs.

Nope, its even doxygen ready comments.... but when you start using quaternions, double quaternions, octonions and other multi-dimensional constructs... people panic. I learned that in school when I did my first 4D data structure for storage.
