So I have to stick to 2003,although it's not as good as 2005.

Grant Chan ("Already tried, i'll stick to Visual Studio 6" below),
gives as his main reason for not moving, as money.
I hid behind that reason for two years and did not move from
V6 to 2003. Finally,last March I purchased Managed C++
(Standard Edition). These last few months has shown, money
or no, one has to move up! Most examples are in C# -- I
don't have it  I didn't want to learn a new language (C#)
(had to anyway -- MC++). So, I might as well move on up, pay
the bucks and join the rest of the world. I'll be buying an
upgrade to 2005, and likely move from MC++ to C#.
(I would purchase through CodeProject -- only they can not sell
me an upgrade. )

We've been hassling Microsoft pretty much daily but we still have no word on what we'll be able to offer. We're crossing our fingers that we'll once again be able to offer upgrades.

Because I feel no need to follow the rest of the sheep. After all, my applications created in this environment run in less than 200K RAM, right? That's less than what outlook takes to show a simple e-mail. And no need for a fast machine, my 386DX 40 can keep up with it very quickly.
Now, if only I can get this QEMM386 thingy to recognize all my memory, I'll be happy forever

I dont really care i`ll just follow the rest of the sheep to where ever they lead me cause i like moving with the times and so should u. The only problem i have is how much resoures VS 2005 consumes compare that to VS 2003 i wont rule out VS 6.0 but i use c# so VS 6.0 is not an option,
I had beta 1 on my AMD 1.5 Ghz , 640MB ram running XP PRO and my PC was slow eem can anyone comment on this ?? whats the resource usage of VS 2005 like ???

beta 1 was pretty buggy. betta 2 was much better. The final release is great. I have an old 1.3 athlon at home and it runs like 2003 from my POV.

Hi!
I'm not very satisfied with VS 2005 so far.
Coding in C# is a lot of fun in VS 2005, but theres some things that still bother me:
- compilation takes longer (can't explain why
- UI reacts a bit slower
- inactive blocks (like #ifdef _DEBUG block #elseif block2 #endif) are greyed out, this is fine, but the UI doesn't update the blocks when switching compilation mode from debug to release and vice versa.
- the editor doesn't remember collapsed code blocks, it sometimes expands them randomly
- IDE doesn't remember my decision to display the output window (View -> Output)
But one very positive thing is that I get VS 2005 for free via MSDNAA

haha that seems to be the solution to lazy people not optimizing there code .
I gotta say, saw the beta of the new Amiga OS 4, I wish I had the same respons in windows . (it was running on a G3(or 4) at 800Mhz).
As for usage.. have not noticed a difference on 2003 and 2005, but hey I got a faster pc :P

I use SD for dotnet 1.1 a lot but at the moment am using VS2005 Beta2. How stable is SD 2?

The text editor, code completion etc. are stable. The debugger needs a bit of work, but is usable. However the form designer went crazy on the final version of the .NET Framework, don't use it without creating a backup of your form.

Yup I'm using SharpDev 2 as well, looks pretty good. I'd like to have two items and them I'm entirely happy:
- Release/Debug compilation switch. David was working on this for the coming release I heard.
- To be able to set a break on an exception when debugging.

The only thing i really like about SharpDevelop, is that orange fish. For the rest, i think i'll just stick to Visual Studio .

It really depends on your environment. As we in part distribute source to other developers, we tend to target the most common environments (VS6 and VS2003), although we also test with VS5.0 (gasp!), VS2002 and VS2005.
As VS2005 becomes more widespread, we'll probably move our new development to it, but for now VS2003 is our primary development environment, with code back-ported to VS6.0 where necessary (ResOrg and LintProject).

There's one solution at the moment that needs VS 2003, But I'm thinking of converting the project to VS2005 so that I can continue to work from there.
Everything else is going to be build in VS2005.

Why do you stick to VS6? I thought that I would never need something else than VS6. I promised myself that I'll never go back after trying the 2005 beta.

you shouldn't say so strong words... of course, you believe it if you're saying it, but it may be because you're just very familiar with VS6.
i do love VS6, i do use it often still (see, my VisualCalc article is still made on VS6), but VS2003 worthes to be used, even for simple C++ projects.
VS2005 worthes it too, but i don't have the cash yetn so...
about only the IDE, VS2kx has improved many useful functionnalities, especially on screen space use...
