I have subscribed the news letters, and received one today.
There is some job information in it, but when I explored the page, I saw "This job is not available in your area. Sorry!", and this made me very unhappy!
First, any public information should NOT be unavailable for anyone, it's unfair and even evil to treat individuals in different ways!
Second, you let me see the link, but you did NOT let me see the content, you wasted my time and made me very unhappy!
I am angry about this, you must regret and explain to the public, and do something to remedy it!

When a business has a job opening very often they are looking for potential employees in their area only. Our site, and hence our job board are global, yet many software businesses are local, so we offer businesses the option of having their ads to be shown only locally.
All too often we have had a business offer a job opening with specific wording that only local applicants need apply yet they have recieved floods of applications from all over the world from candidates unwilling or unable to relocate. This is frustrating to the employers.

Your reason sounds like right, but what you are doing is badly wrong.
The business does not want to be disturbed, but we, the community, are terribly disturbed. There must be many persons that encountered the same thing, do you think we are too stupid to think about the place and probability to work there?
If the content is not for us, you should not send the link to us. You send the link to us, and we click it, but we get nothing, only time wasted, are you cheating for the pvs?
You are even not willing to give a word "sorry"!

I make no comment on your ability to understand what employers are asking for, but what we were seeing was hundreds of inappropriate applications from candidates. It was for this reason that we introduced this option for employers.
As to sending the links to items that are not avaiable that is a problem so I apologise. I'll work on getting this fixed.

I also ran across this and was annoyed by it, especially as I am specifically will ing to relocate (let me out of here Aaaahhhh). However I also found that by going to the job board you can access the information.
Having read this thread I can understand the businesses irritation with floods of enquiries and Chris's need to address the issue, obviously filtering on the news letter is required.
Your later comment on "do you think we are too stupid" is not realistic, Chris had to implement this because of the flood of STUPID enquiries the clients were getting.
Have you looked into the forums lately, the repeated idiotic questions and the cross posting is rampant. Idiotic is a generous description.
If you had approval rights on the articles you would find 60%+ of all articles are complete rubish and never make it to publishing.
So if you have been offended by this cencoring - tough, get over it, the clients are paying for a service, we of the community are NOT paying customers and none other than yourself seems to be worried about the inconvenience.

Is there a reason why The Code Project doesn't use GZIP to compress it's web pages?
I was using Fiddler and noticed that the average size for a CP message board page was 100k and wasn't compressed at all. With compression I think it would be around 16k since it's mostly text. There are also a bunch of articles on here about using GZIP in IIS, which I happen to have used to enable it here at work so foreign offices don't have to wait so long to load our Intranet sites.
The only reason I ask is that it would probably speed up the pages for me (Work Internet is slow) and I'm guessing that it would also save CP on bandwidth usage.
Anyway, the site is still great, with or without GZIP

We do use GZIP. It's a bit weird though since some GZip check utilities say we do, some say we don't. Yahoo's YSlow and Port80 both report correctly that our content comes down the pipe zipped.

Thanks for the quick response!
Upon further investigation (Calling IT and Fiddling at home), our proxy server at work decodes all GZIP and Deflate compressed files before serving them to the rest of the network.
I guess I'll just have to deal with slow work internet for now...

That appears to be a bug. Please advise.

No, it's not a bug. It's there deliberately to stop members from trying to pretend they are other members.
What name are you trying to use? I can look it up and double check if you wish

My name is registered as Member 1078443 and I want to change it to Philippe Roy (my own name).
Maybe the message could be less confusing. If I was trying to do something that is not allowed, it should say so instead of the obscure message that is actually displayed.

What would be better? An explanation of why we do this? Suggestions on another name that's available? Simpler / Different wording?

First, I am not trying to register. I am already a registered member.
Second, My name is 'Philippe Roy', and I really can't do much about that. If there is another person with the same name, these things happen. Imagine if my name were 'John Smith'! If the database logic assumes so kind of unicity of the name, then that is a bug (it should not). On the other hand, if you guys want to ensure that I am not impersonating someone else's identity, I find this noble and good, and I will work with you in order to build your comfort to a level that you will see that I am not impersonating anyone else, but I should still be able to keep my own identity as it is with my own name.
Third, I also tried to register myself as 'P. Roy' and that produced the same result.
How could we get that resolved?

This like almost all the restrictions on the site were implemented because some kidiots were abusing the feature before. Some sites will suggest alternate usernames if the one you requested is already taken. How hard would implementing this for the CP display name be?

From what we can surmise a Microsoft patch that was applied caused a database server to go a little weird on us. We gave it a good, hard kick and it seems to be behaving again.

Apologies if this has already been suggested before; however, in the last few weeks, I've seen 3 individual users post "articles" through the submission wizard when they mean to ask a question on one of the boards. Would it be possible to place a link to the discussion boards, possibly with some red text on one of the pages of the article submission wizard, to make it crystal clear what the wizard is for, and help prevent this from happening?
As has been seen with the Lounge etc it is not always 100% successful, but it may help.
