One thing that I found confused people is that HTC used to brand their phones under many names. Orange UK called them the SPVs, O2 called them the XDAs for a few examples.

Some time ago I had an i-mate SP3i Smartphone. It worked fine for some weeks but then the joystick failed to work and then the soft-keys stopped working.
Was a hardware issue and many others had the same problem...

I have the cheapest phone I could get with GSM. My carrier was already *threatening* me to update from my CDMA phone. I don't even know what model it is, and can't find it either written on the case or in the software (along with firmware version etc). Main use: sending one SMS per day to let mom know I arrived.
To talk to friends, I use instant messaging. Like someone said above, if I'm not at the computer I'm probably sleeping.
...but I have an iPod touch too :P

 I also think that TV on mobile phones (called HandyTV in Austria) will not become a killerapp like SMS

The Problem is: We don't need smart phones - just smarter people with phones.
Perhaps smarter people to call, as well, would be a worthy lemma.
Besides - what good is a phone that doesn't include a can opener and corkscrew blade? A nail file would be nice - and a mirror for the ladies.

I'm actually surprised at the number of people without a SmartPhone. I thought I was one of only a small handfull of geeks to be without one.

Actually, most of the geeks I know do not have a smart-phone. The $70+++ per month fee that goes with one of those is just TOO MUCH!

Agreed. My mobile (cell) phone is on pay as you go, I refuse to be drawn into an expensive contract with these leeches.

Maybe you just need to make phone calls and writing text messages (SMS)
Maybe you need a reliable phone 
Often have troubles with T-Mobile MDA phones. Often I am not able to make a simple phone call 
- LOOX 600: Testing device running on PPC2002, stable reliable but no GSM unit - just a Pocket PC
- HTC S310: Private Smartphone, works fine
- MDA Compact: Private equipment (previously firm equipment) OK
- MDA Compact II: Private equipment (previously firm equipment) OK
- MDA Compact III: firm equipment; Problems, Problems, ...
- MDA Touch: firm equipment; Problems, Problems, Problems, Problems, ...
As you can see that only newer devices making problems 
To put this in other words: Newer Windows Mobile OS s....!

I have an HTC s310 with WM6 on it an no problem
so newer Windows Mobile based devices isnt the bug

Yes and no.
Recently I had to do a soft-reset on a "MDA Touch" and then it was not able to boot (this was the second time I had that problem with the same device - I gave it back to my employer and got an temporary device - MDA Compact III)
Now I have an MDA Compact III which is often not able to connect through GPRS or EDGE. Maybe this is a problem at the operator T-Mobile ....
Making phone calls and writing/receiving text message works fine on that device but my employer has a new MDA (diamond?) device and he is not able to receiving text message or text message are delayed by one day (mobile operator problem).

Come one, a telephone is a telephone. I use it to make calls, not play games, send e-mails, etc.
I have had a smartphone, but I wasn't satisfied with the reception of it. Once I got to the point where I wanted a different phone I start thinking about the requirements for me and I quickly realized that I wanted a phone to call and I don't wanted to be bothered with e-mail while waiting for the train or sitting at the lunch table

For me it was the fact that nothing every really worked very well. It wasn't very good as a phone, it wasn't very good with email (too fiddly to write them), it wasn't very good at surfing the net and so on.
I just thought that I was the only prudent one. I know plenty of people that have jumped on getting the latest and greatest kit going.

I don't even have a cellphone. The reason is I do not need an extra $50US /per month bill. If you want to get a hold of me email me. I am usually by a computer 18 hours a day if not more. If I am not by a computer than I probably would not answer the phone anyways...

Phones are for calling or SMSing people and "smart phones" tend to make really bad actual phones.

I figured a high tech phone would just be another receptacle for junk mail!, and I'm not a gamer so for me the expense would be a waste.
And here I thought I was one of the few techies without one! Go figure.

I purchased a used iPhone, the non-3g version. Where I live there is only the Edge network, where I work they have 3g, but I try to spend as little time in that city as possible...so the older iPhone works for me.
Reasons for the iPhone - it was $75 for a 4gb and I have yet to load any type of music on it. I get to have all the virtual bubble wrap I could possibly pop on it. MochaVNC runs well on it, and it's cool controlling my pc from my iPhone. And I appreciate being able to check my gmail and yahoo mail accounts painlessly on a fairly decent size screen. Bonus - the phone I purchased had a whole line of dead touch screen area, making dialing manually impossible. The former owner never noticed because he mainly used it for texting. It was still under warranty so I contacted Apple and they replaced it with a NEW first gen. Since it's not a new iPhone, adding it to my AT&T Wireless account meant no contract, but I did have to had a $20 dollar iphone media package, this included unlimited internet and 200 txt msg. But because I have a family talk plan with the Unlimited Text Family plan I don't have to worry about going over my 200 txt limit. I'm essentially paying $5 more a month to use internet on my iPhone (when I was using my RazorV3xx it was $15) Otherwise, I can't beat it with a stick.
What I dislike about the iPhone, is the texting can be a little awkward at times and if you're trying to rattle off quick answers the predictive auto-correcting spelling can make for some really messed up messages. Luckily my friends and family have now gotten used to it and have all ordered secret decoder rings for my cryptic late night messages. Secondly, I hate it that Apple in their infinite wisdom does not allow for the sending or receiving of MMS messages. We have also learned to work around that, but it's just dumb not to be able to attach a picture or sound-bite to a text message. Nor can you forward text messages (if you can, I haven't found the way). Plus it sucks as a speaker phone, and I hate that I lose voice control when using my Jawbone ear piece.
Caveat - YAY no chain forwards with potentially embarrassing pictures or sound-bites.
Bottomline - the iPhone has quickly become integrated into my connected life and it is essentially a more portable version of my touchscreen tablet notebook - the only things I can do with my notebook that I can't with my iPhone are burn cds/dvds and graphic design.
