Hi all,
Im having a little problem retrieving the text from the textarea. I load the text for the text area and display it as follow in the aspx page.
<textarea id="editorArea" name="htmlEditorArea" rows="40" cols="60">
<%=editorAreaText %>
</textarea>
and then in the code behind I want to retrieve the text that has been modified by the user. I tried the following.
HtmlTextArea _textArea = (HtmlTextArea)Page.FindControl("editorArea");
string _content = _textArea.Value.Trim();
But it returns the HtmlTextArea as null and then throws the exception when getting the value that object reference not set to an instance of an object, I know this is because it did not assign the control, but what am I doing wrong?

Can you not use ASP.NET controls?
<asp:TextBox Rows="40" Columns="60" TextMode=MultiLine></asp:TextBox>
And in the codebehind

Unfortunitly not, or I don't know how, the reason being is I'm using a WYSIWYG editor that changes the textarea to an htmlarea, I found it here, it is called HtmlArea.
Basically I have a master page with all my content pages. Each of my content pages contains one of these textareas and it uses the name of the textarea to change it into a HtmlArea, so basically on the content page I have the following.
<textarea id="editorArea" name="htmlEditorArea" rows="40" cols="60">
<%=editorAreaText %>
</textarea>
<asp:Button runat="server" ID="btnSave" Text="Save Changes" OnClick="btnSave_Click" />
<asp:Button runat="server" ID="btnCancel" Text="Cancel Changes" PostBackUrl="~/index.aspx" />
<script type="text/javascript" language="javascript1.2">
var config = new Object();
config.bodyStyle = "background-color:black;color:white";
editor_generate('htmlEditorArea',config);
</script>
Thing is because I use a master page, and this is my own conclusion, when I run the page it changes the name of my textarea if it is an asp:textarea and then the editor can't locate the texterea anymore. So I'm kinda forced to use htmltextarea

OK - you need to post the question on the message board on the article - the original author will be able to help. I don't know what he is doing under the covers. Unless somebody else around here can help? Sorry.

As far as I know, the only way the server (codebehind) can access the control is if it has the runat='server' attribute.
As you have the source from the original artical, you should be able to modify it so it renders the runat='server' attribute when it parses the htmlArea and renders it as a text area.
Or....post a question to the author like I said earlier.

aahh - that's a problem then. Try and re-engineer his code to render the runat tag then. Looks like the only solution left. Have a look at the code, if you have trouble, post questions here!! I'm sure somebody will help.

Look at line 231 of the editor.js file included with the project.
It starts with
+ '<textarea ID="_'
try changing it to
+ '<textarea Runat='server' ID="_'
See what happens. Haven't tested this at all.

What is meant by HttpContext WebService.Context ? what is the purpose? When will we go to use it?

From MSDN libray installed with Visual Studio 2005 for the Session.Timeout property:
The Timeout property can be set in the Web.config file for an application using the timeout attribute of the sessionState configuration element, or you can set the Timeout property value directly using application code.<br />

The Timeout property cannot be set to a value greater than 525,600 minutes (1 year).
Seems like nothing lasts forever, not even sessions

Incresing session timeout doesn't looks good solution to me. Because it wastes lot of server memory for keeping all these sessions alive.

You're right, I just thought that is what s/he wanted. The cookie solution you suggested is the way to go of course. I even have it implemented in my project but it didn't come to mind

Like "Remember Me On This Computer" Works ? You can use cookie for this. Set expiry time of cookie to a long date. Each time check this cookie, if it exists create session.

You can tell ASP to use a database as the session store. That way, all the session states are persisted.

Session state last forever? no way...how can a session last forever after all its a session right...either you need to save it somewhere somehow like in db,cookie,xml etc

Are there no samples with the Dundas toolkit? Knowing Dundas, they would have followed the standard .NET method of binding to data - but can't be sure?

Hi all...
I am experiencing problems due to session sharing in firefox. I have made and application and when I log on with two different users with different privileges on the same machine the session of one got intermixed with the other. For example:
Scenerio:
I login with user abc 123
Then I logon with xyz 456
I click on a link which is shown in abc and I get directed to the same page as requested but now the user name which i am showing at the top gets changed showing xyz now and when I get back to my home page again through a link the homepage gets modified according to xyz settings.
Please help me in this regard.
