I assume that the Scots were talking about cask strength (60% or more alcohol), and that the water was the pure spring water you are supposed to use to make Whisky, not the stuff you get in taps.

I guess it's a very old joke when Italians have been the majority of the Catholics in the US. Unlike the Catholic and Orthodox faiths, confession in Protestant denominations is done directly to God rather than through a priest. (and yes, I'm fun at parties  )
