Í have been working with CMOS since the 1970s and grounding everything, including the cat, has become part of the ritual. Early CMOS was much more vulnerable to ESD than today's, but it's still a problem.
And thanks for reminding me. I could use the time and repair my old Atari ST. Nothing too serious, just a mechanical failure in the floppy drive and I think I still have a 3.5 inch DD floppy drive to replace it.
And my Atari 800 needs a new ROM. I hope the dead one is in a socket, so that I can solder up a replacement that uses an 28C256 EEPROM that plugs right in.

I had a laptop motherboard die on me after using a vacuum to suck the dust out the vents. I' had done it before without issues, so I have to assume that it must have created static that fried something.

Personally, I use compressed air to clean the insides of my computers, and have been doing it for decades. As in, the type my dad (an auto mechanic) has in the garage. I stick something long like a pen or screwdriver in the fans so they can't start spinning faster than they're designed to and blow the living sh*t out of it all. They always come out looking new with a minimal amount of effort.
I keep reading that people don't recommend that as there can be some sort of oily residue/build-up coming out of the compressor. I don't know what these people are using, but I've never seen anything but air come out of it. I've done the experiment - blowing air onto a white sheet of paper for a few minutes. It didn't end up looking any less clean than the next sheet in the stack.
