Result: an air bubble under the screen protector and a visible - and "feelible" - crack, albeit tiny.
Sod it! I managed to keep the old phone pristine without a screen protector for years and years, then in just six months this gets damaged. 
Since it comes from the manufacturer fitted with a protector, I order a replacement from Amazon: tempered glass with a fitting kit, and it arrived this morning.
Read all the instructions then with trepidation carefully peel off the old protector, and ... no damage at all, it just punched through the protector and missed the screen!
Alignment kit fitted, drop on new protector and we're done - looks perfect again! Phew - I hate damaging things!
My neighbour lived with a crazy-cracked screen for months then replaced his phone - only to have the new one chewed on by his son's dog within a month.

Those glass screen protectors are the best in my opinion.
Like a crash helmet, they are designed to absorb the acceleration by breaking - while a thin plastic screen protector(the equivalent of a medieval helmet) will transfer the kinetic energy through to the device's screen.

After breaking the protecting glass three times, I convinced the wife to buy what they call 'wallet case'... Hopefully will hold on...

I have a case round the back and sides - partly because the new fashion is "glass cases" which are slippery in the hand, but mostly so I can attach a steel plate to the case and use it with the car magnet for satnav - but I don't like the ones which close over the front: every one I've seen in use scratches the display after a while.

Sure they do, but more as a redundant backup instrument and to confirm that the electronics are not in phantasyland. No problems as long as both agree within a certain margin of error.

Got a new phone for my wife last Christmas. She opened the box, my 6-year-old son came near her while bouncing around (Christmas excitement), hit her, she dropped the phone, glass and a bit of LCD crashed. Total duty time without accident : 0 minute.
We had to replace the LCD for 85€ ... for a 120€ phone. I do prefer repairing instead of buying new whenever possible, but ... damn.

My last two smart 'phones have been Cat - both IP 68. My previous two feature 'phones were also IP68. They all still work despite a very hard life - dropping, sinking, swimming, leaving in tropical sun for a couple of hours, even demonstrating their waterproofness in a tankard of ale. 
Pay more up-front, but all pretty much indestructible.
