I currently work on my laptop, I only have an extra mouse.
I've been thinking about buying a docking station, two extra monitors, and an external keyboard and (new) mouse (I think this is my first optical mouse after my last wheel mouse  ).
My hardware knowledge is pretty lacking though.
It seems to me this docking station[^] should do just nicely.
It's Dell (just like my laptop), but it works with USB, so I guess it would work with other brands too (I've had vendor and even laptop specific docking stations at work).
Not sure what to look for in a monitor though.
I guess size and resolution are important, anything else?
This LG monitor[^] looks pretty good.
It has no borders, which is nice when you place two next to each other.
Any tips?

It looks like a nice monitor - I've got two older LG monitors and never had a problem with them (and an LG TV which is pretty much the same - occasionally you have to unplug it or it forgets all about sound).
I like the way I have mine set up: one portrait, one landscape. Landscape is great for VS, Portrait is great for reading articles, internet, and writing documents as you can see the whole page really nicely.

The pixel response time (the time that a single pixel takes to change from white to black) may be important to you. If you are a gamer, a fast response time (1 millisecond) may be important. For normal office work or video display, even monitors with a 5ms response time will be fine. If you do lots of graphical design, you will want to pay attention to the colour fidelity of the monitor (how accurately do the colours on the monitor represent the "real" colours). Lastly, a higher contrast can give you brighter images etc.
YMMV, and the only way to be certain that a monitor answers your needs is to look at an actual monitor.

Good one, I'm not that kind of gamer who needs super fast response times (and I'm not much of a PC gamer at all anymore).
This monitor is advertised as a gaming monitor though (even with 5 ms response time).
250 cd/m2 doesn't seem to bright when compared to other monitors (300 or 350).
I'm also not sure on the 1920 x 1080 resolution on a 27" screen...
Also, a more practical issue, the height of the stand cannot be adjusted.
That can be a real PITA
Guess I'll shop around a bit further (although I may just settle for this one in the end)

We use a setup like this and I don't think I can advocate enough for it over a USB docking station, providing you've got the port for it on the bottom of your laptop.

Yeah, I do have a connection on the bottom of my laptop.
But that's the kind of setup that's only compatible with specific laptops from a specific vendor, which is a huge downside to me at this point.
I use my laptop from work for private stuff so if work decides to give me a new laptop, or I decide to switch work, or I decide to buy my own, that docking station may not work anymore.

That's fair. But honestly, the model restrictions don't seem to mean much. I currently use a Precision on a dock meant for a Latitude and haven't seen any issues.

I've had a docking station for a the correct laptop, but because of some manufacturing error half of the docking stations at work didn't fit very well, making them disconnect at the slightest movement 
I'm not sure what the advantage of such docking stations are over USB docking stations though?
Pros: Reaction speed?
Cons: Vendor/laptop lock in

I've not been a fan of the screen reaction time that I've gotten from USB docks; the latency was just enough to be irritatingly noticeable, but it has been a couple years. Maybe they've gotten better.

Docking station with 2 view ports. I have 2 27 inch Asus VG278Q Gaming Monitors.
These monitors are pricey, but they are the best I have ever had, so they work well with my gaming/game development/regular coding, and for watching movies, etc.

Looking at the MG278Q... 27" at 2560 x 1440 resolution.
Looks really nice, but a bit too expensive for me I think
I mostly work, no (new) games, no movies, no game development...
This monitor would be overkill.
Although I DO miss the good old PC gaming days and with this new setup...

Then go with the sleek, no border, 27 inchers that you have been looking at, that are in your price range, and you should be golden.

Why a docking station? Just use the external video port on the laptop and plug a big monitor in.
Then a USB mouse and keyboard on a hub and you are all set.

I only have one external video port on my laptop, but I want two (preferably same-sized) monitors.
If I get an external keyboard I'd have to put my laptop screen so far away that it's too small to read at all.
