When you think up some user of your system, create a profile, and then pretend it's a real user who's using your system?

Our system does something with lease cars, so typical profiles would be:
John: Uses his car to drive to work and do groceries, he never drives more than the maximum allowed private distance.
Kate: Kate likes travelling and drives her car more than she should. She always pays extra because she's never within the maximum limit.

Usually there's a little more data, like age, an actual picture or avatar, etc.
When developing we should think "would this work for John and Kate?" and so be more engaged with our users.
I've had this at school, but I forgot what it's called. No doubt some people in here know about it.
Unfortunately my Google-fu is failing me today.
