I was wondering if anyone can recommend an easy to setup database application to install on Windows server or Ubuntu (can't use any 3rd party online applications). I am locked out of a REDcap[^] application as no one seems to know the credentials to manage it (I just started working here about 2 months ago).
I need an application that can server many groups of departments; each would have their own application I would design and deploy. I haven't used REDcap before and was going to check it out as it sounds similar of what I am looking for. I just want a central platform to easily setup and deploy to support the departments. It's just me in the IT department and I work for a non-profit right now.

One thing I need to do is move current Grant information into a new database and improve the tables and add new fields so better reporting; another application I need to make is an inventory app so all the tenants can keep their inventory of controlled substances (scientific hazmat, etc). And then whatever then next latest big use for it needs to be. Does that make sense?
I have to keep in on-premise.

I don't want to program my own, I don't want to reinvent the wheel. However, this is the way things are looking.
What sucks is, I had a bunch of php code for a database app that I created a few years ago for another company but I can't find any of my backups for the code.
I was hoping there was an open source program that helped create on-premise applications similar to Kohezion.com or something but for internal apps.

SQL Server? Oracle? MySql? MySql Lite?
I don't get the question. Deciding on a database system, should be a departmental decision, and should be a no brainer if experience engineers/developers are around.
I don't know you are your skill set, but if you are asking this question, I think you (and your team) have bigger problems at hand.

It's an odd question.
So for example, I have an existing SQL and MySql databases. Many dept. managers need and application to store inventory (database1), or need an application that stores records and then different views are needed (database2) for those records. I want an application that I can design the application attach some users for the permisssions, feed it a database and be done with it.
Make sense? I don't want to write php from scratch.

Keep in mind I'm not a huge ran of RoR, but what about just using something like Rails scaffolding for this?

Come to think of it, CakePHP has scaffolding too if you're more comfortable with PHP. Would make the app at least easier to write.

There should be some of the shelf asset management apps that should meet your needs. I'd be using SQL Server for ease of support!

As a Jew I can tell you that we make a lot of effort to make bacon-like products, like smoked goose breast...The reason we do not eat the original product is not that we do not like meat, but we do not eat all kind of meat (and that doesn't make that meat worst - only forbidden)...
Maybe you will do some comparison between the two one day - a CP article maybe

Everything in column A causes cancer.
Everything in column B cures cancer.
The only question is which things are in each column... And I'm pretty sure there's a random number generator (Well, letter generator) involved.
So the choices are:
1) Pay attention to the two columns, make sure never to eat anything in column A (Until the next study shows up and it moves to column B... and back a week later), and live in perpetual fear of getting cancer.
2) Quit your whining and have a bacon cheeseburger
So I'm with you... Pass me some of that bacon!

On the bright side they can now start to ban pig-derived products so as not to offend Muslims under the guise that they're doing it for reasons of public health. Now if only they could find a link between Christmas and cancer...
