Assuming you are a (digital) photographer, and would like to sort the pictures you have taken in a shooting session, what would be the top 5 required features of a utility tool helping to do so ?

Mine:
1- Giving notes and make operation according to notes (like "erase all with note<4" or "copy all >2 to directory xyz" )
2- Displaying 1 to 5 pictures aside to be able to compare
3- Fast
4- Tagging, possibly automated ( face recognition )
5- Did i mention fast ?

Group pictures automatically: group by location (if available), time

When I shoot a high-speed sequence (i.e. only small time difference between pictures), show only e.g. first and last, and a click to see "28 more pictures like this".

Easy "voting" pictures (score 0-5), use them as filter. So I can boil down a source folder of 500 to a top 20 with score 5, a top 50 with vote >= 4 etc. Use them as filter and - of course - allow to aply operaitons to all in the filter

Tagging has two purposes: one would be the traditional "better search", tagging faces etc.
The other would be creating a batch of pictures e.g. to "print for mom". In this case, I just want to click the existing tag to add it to the group

Good integration with image post-processing might be more important than the image post processing you provide.

Side-by-side would be noice.

There are various ways to group data.

The basic idea is: After a vacation I have hundreds or even over thousand pictures. It's pretty tedious to pick select and find the good ones, with all "data explosion from digital photography.

A "Browse" view that reduces the noise by grouping similar/same-location pictures, where I can "zoom in" to see more would be most welcome here.

From timestamp alone (EXIF or even file), you could recognize a fast sequence of pictures, pictures taken close together, etc.
(use case: I walk to Church A, take dozen of pictures there, then, on the way to Castle B, I take a single picture of a nice pot of flowers, and at Castle B, I do another dozen of pictures.

I do think such a pattern could be recognized, and could be used to present the pictures. One way would be a "time axis". It could also be used to reduce the amount of images shown at once: instead of showing me 25 small pictures for that day, you could show two from the first batch, the intermediate, and two from the last batch.

Location could be taken from EXIF data, so images from the same location can be grouped together and explored on a map.

From EXIF data, you could even recognize things such as aperture sequences (a "fast" sequence of pictures taken with varying aperture).

Of course, groups could also be created manually, and collapsed / expanded.

Another approach is looking at the image data, there are good "image similarity" algorithms out there already.

The grouping is actually a very good idea, and so is a grouping by timeline. This one could be parametrized (split groups when more than x minutes between images) and/or plausibilisation could be make using localization and time... This is a great idea to explore.

Over the last 30 years, I've owned between two and about a dozen cameras at any given time.

During the whole of that time, I've coincidentally taken between two and about a dozen pictures (not counting the first few with each camera, just to see how they work).

I haven't got around to sorting them, yet, because just too damned much effort is involved, so any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Now seriously, I just tried to find a way to navigate to this[^] from the CP menus above, but no chance. The only way is to go through the who's who page, and click on an item in the user profile who has it.

The 'Premium' badge was created in connection with ::Workspaces project and all those participated in it (or bought it) got the badge. I do not think now anyone can get it (and in fact it has no meaning anymore but Chris let us keep for now)...
