Retrieving column names of a table
There are basically 3 approaches to this problem:
1.Use the sp_help procedure to get extended information about a
database object. By database object, we mean a table, view etc.
2.You can use the following select statement to retrieve a table’s columns:
SELECT TOP 0 * FROM table_name
3.The third approach, which I personally prefer, is using the schema object of SQL Server. For example, to retrieve the column names of Authors table, you can
use the following SELECT statement:
SELECT column_name FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS WHERE TABLE_NAME 'authors'
Which results in the following result set:
column_name<br />
----------------------------<br />
au_id<br />
au_lname<br />
au_fname<br />
phone<br />
address<br />
city<br />
state<br />
zip<br />
contract<br />
(9 row(s) affected)

I have a data table and I want to find the row in the data table that contains the string "Dan" in the third column of the data table but I am unsure how to do this.
I have looked at .find but it uses the PK, which is set in the original database but not in the data table. Is it possible to bring the PK and the field names from the database to the data table?
Thanks,
Dan

Hey
Can you not just iterate through each row checking the content of the third column?
Or maybe look at this:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.data.datatable.primarykey(VS.80).aspx
Try looknig at datasets in msdn also they may be more suitable for the job as I am sure they retain the schema.
Hope this is of use

In a report I want to check if a picture exists before showing it.
I put this function in the Report Properties:
Function DoesFileExist(PathnFileName As String) As Boolean
DoesFileExist = My.Computer.FileSystem.FileExists(PathnFileName)
End Function
And in the Visibility property of the image placeholder I call the DoesFileExist function.
Inside the MS Visual Studio Development Editor everything works fine, but when I deploy the report to the IIS Server and run it from there it doesn't work:
the DoesFileExist function always return "False" even if the pictures exist.
I'm 100% sure it's a permission problem, I tried to correctly set the permissions both on IIS and on NTFS Folder with no luck.
Please help.
Thank you,
Roberto

Emailing the answer is bad, it means the answer isn't here for everyone else to benefit from.

If your compleatly starting from scratch I'd recommend getting a good book on the subject. I don't personally know of any good beginner books sorry.

Here's how to configure Sql Server 2005 Express for remote access:

You don't need any shares. Sql Server is network based not file based.

I wanna include my SQL Server 2000 to my Project. So people needn't to install SQL Server 2000. They just install my software. It will automatic attach the database into a very-small SQL Server on my Disc. Could i do that?
If not, can you give me a solution that solve my problem???
The problem is Install software and its database without requiring the SQL Server.
Thanks

Take a look at SQL 2005 Mobile / Compact Edition.
|
|
|
|
|
I have done this with an application that uses SQL2000 as its database. There are a few steps and a couple of small apps to write to run teh scripts to attache the database.
But I am having problems making this work with Sql2005 due to the network connection default to dis-allow network connections to SQL2005 after it is installed so the out of the box experiemce does not work.
Email me if you want info on what we did for SQL2000. ron@arian.co.nz

Can anyone give me some help regarding Creation of Indexes in SQL Server. I also need to know its advantages and most importantly, its difference when compared to Primary Key Constraints.
The name is Sandeep

Hello Sandeep,
Indexes are created for faster retrival of data. Its like searching a topic in a book with the help of index in book. Imagine if have to search the topic in a book without an index. It will be slower as you have to browse through each an every page to check for the topic.
Indexes are of two types
1) Clustered index
2) Non clustered index.
For more information about these two type index you can check books online of sql server
Everytime you create a primary key using enterprise manager, it by default creates a clustered index. But thats not mandatory. You can have a primary key without any index.
Its because its recommened to have a clustered index on a unique column.
I hope I answered your question.
please let me know incase of any query.

Hello Rahul,
Thnx for your reply. Let me tell you what I have understood by Indexes. Please verify my points.
Indexes should be only used in tables used for data retrieval and not in tables where frequent INSERT & UPDATE take place.
When an Index is created over a table, then there is no need for defining a PrimaryKey for that table.
Indexes are best suited for Views.
Are these correct?
