If you don't like the built in deployment model why not use xcopy deployment?

Hi there,
Thank you for your reply.
I'is not that i do not like the build in method.
But i want to automate the publishing project using C#.
A example.
I have a web application.
I want to create a tool where i can publish the application to a specified directory on my computer and the do some stuff.
The only thing missing is a way to automate the publisch action without having to do it myself.
I want to call the buildengine from code.

Having inherited someone else's code to maintain (we've all been there), I am having a problem with the (3rd party, non-MS) installer creator. Specifically, it includes two files that I cannot find, which are:
Microsoft.VC90.CRT.cat
Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest
From what I can tell, they are Microsoft VC++ redistributables, which should be installing to the folder "C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.VC90.CRT(...)".
For some reason, I cannot find these files (.cat and .manifest) anywhere; Google and MSDN searches have not turned them up. If anyone can clue me in to where I can obtain them, it would be most helpful.
Thanks in advance.

Look in the "Redist" folder inside your Visual Studio installation in "Program Files".
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\redist\x86\Microsoft.VC90.CRT

I did find that folder, and it contained the .manifest file, but not the .cat file. I don't know why it would be missing, perhaps something is wrong with my VS install?
Thank you for your help.

Like you, I found the .manifest file on my machine at work. But here I'm using VS2008 Express. At home I have the standard edition, so I'll check tonight for it.
Aren't .cat files usually used for installation, though? If you have the Visual Studio installation disc handy, I'd search there first.
-Nope, not on the home machine either. Sorry about that.

There is your problem.
The general layout of a Service is, in OnStart, you are expected to start a seperate thread that handles your main service code loop, such a listeners or some kind of polling loop, ... This releases OnStart and returns control back to the Service Control Manager.
In OnStop, you shutdown this loop as appropriate and let the thread stop gracefully.
Putting all of your code in OnStart gives you exactly the error message your getting because OnStart never returns control back to the SCM within the default 30 seconds the SCM expects OnStart to return.

Have you run it under the debugger yet?

Wrong. Put a breakpoint at the top of the Start)( method.

In the event log you can see further information, if there's an exception you will be able to see it there as well.

You can debug services using the AndersonImes.ServiceProcess dll which works really well. Had a quick look but can't find it so you may have to contact[^] him directly: well worth having in your toolkit.

I have a user control (composed of 10 text boxes).
on certain user inputs -> multiple rows of above user control are added to a form.
After certain amount of operation, I start getting error - cannot create window handle.
How do I need to clear window handle? Shouldn't it be automatically disposed?

I do not want to show them all at once. At a time say 100 are visible but after the user changes the input I need to show other 100. But how do a ensure that the handle is destroyed for previous ones?

So you have 100 visible UserControls with 10 TextBoxes each, and a lot of invisible ones?
That is a bad design. If you need that many user inputs, use a listing control, maybe a DataGridView.

KaurGurpreet wrote: How do I need to clear window handle?
You don't. That's handled by the controls themselves.
If you're running into this problem, it could be that your Showing a form with ShowDialog (not Show!), but never Disposing it when you're done. Just because you can't see the form anymore doesn't mean it's gone. If you don't Dispose the form, you're leaking resources (handles). This issue does not come up if the form is shown with the Show method.
If you're putting up hundreds and hundreds of controls, your design is the problem, not the window handles being released.
