Dear all,
I have the following issue. (Am using windows vista Buisness 32 bit)
- Lets say ia mapped a network drive. Finished whatever to be done and i disconnected the mapped drive. When i again right click on My Computer -> Map Network drive, i can still find the previouse address of mapped drive in the drop down list. ex: \\192.168.88.4\drive
My question is how to remove, or delete or to make the pc never remember the address next time i wana map a drive?
Best regards,
0 will always beats the 1.

I've got a network setup with ISA server included. From the DNS/DHCP/ISA box (same box) I can ping the other virtual machine and I can ping the real machine that it is on. I can't ping the other machines and the other machines can't ping them. Same thing for wireless connections. Add to that that it seems that the dhcp is not working on those machines, its giving me a timeout as opposed to an unreachable.
config as follows:
(vm)
ISA ---- Switch ----- Wireless Router ---- Laptops
| | |
DB | Dev
(vm)| (real)
|
SVN
(real)
Suggestions? Any questions?

Some VM-Setups have a local-connection type, which limits access from a virtual machine to the real machine its running on. It will also create a seperate LAN-Entry on the real machines networking to enable communication between the two of them.
Since your problem is that you can ping the VM from the host and the host from the VM, DHCP on the host only works on the host and VM, this could be your source of problems.
Cheers,
Sebastian

Thanks Sebastian, but I managed to resolve the issue. It didn't occur to me at first to check whether the switch itself was faulty. Connecting any computer to the server proved it was, and thus another lesson in life is learned!
If in doubt of pinging across a network, don't forget to test the switch!
However, what you said sounds plausible. I wouldn't personally know since I'm more of a communications (protocol) guy as opposed to a networking guy!

Hi There
Just wondering if you guys can help me.
I'm trying to set up VPN at home through my W2k3 server, but cant seem to get past the username and password authentication. The server does not appear to respond at this point.
Any idea's why this may be?
The users I'm trying are set to allow vpn connections etc on the server, and I have port 1723 open on my router and pointing to my server (I've tried it on both network cards)
Any idea's? I cant determin if the problem is client or server side as it does get to the authentication bit... Are there any secret settings in the connection properties I should be setting?
Thanks
oooo, the Jedi's will feel this one....

I have a PC running Vista. Now I'd like to install Windows Server 2003 on the 2nd hard disk and create a dual boot. I can set BIOS to boot from either disk, but I don't want to re-install Vista completely.
Has anyone done this way? Any suggestion is welcome.
Best,
Jun

Hi, does anyone know what is the difference between WSUS server and the cache content of Microsoft Windows Update in ISA 2004? Currently my organization already has ISA 2004 and I don't want to duplicate update of each machine. So could i used the feature cache content of Microsoft Windows Update in ISA 2004 instead of deploy WSUS?
Thank,

We have a shared project that is used in many solutions we have under MS Visual Source Safe 2005.
This project has a reference to a third party component that we all have installed on our machines, located in the directory C:\Program Files\Some Third Party Component\Something.DLL
Now, since we all have the shared project and the referenced DLL located in the same places on each of our machines, life is good.
Now along comes the 64 bit world. A new development machine running a 64 bit operating system doesn't have a C:\Program Files\ folder containing the necessary 32 bit components, it has a C:\Program files (x86)\ folder.
So either the 32 bit machines can check in the reference that works for them, or the 64 bit machine can check in the reference that works for it. Either way, someone is unable compile the latest version.
This is also an issue for things located in C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWow64
One solution we have currently is to manually create and populate the (x86) folders and SysWow64 folders on 32 bit machines, which is working, I guess, but... gak.
Has anyone else run into this fun yet?
How did you deal with it?
Is there a best practice here?

hi Jack
Well i never came across the problem, just that it had my boss very angry when i wanted a file and he checkeditout somewhere in his system. am using vs2005/2008 and sql 2005 and i had no problems lately , i think i had a lot of problems with sourcesafe that i can master it and its bugs. The SS pluggin in VS sometimes it gets buggy. just make a backup of your work as a zip file so that your work will not be lost.

I'm strictly a developer and 90% is asp.net development. My boss is making me maintain our server and i have no clue what to do. I did find an article[^] but it seems pretty generalized. Could i have some recommendations on some books that really dig down into administrating ASP.NET on IIS
Thanks,

Hi, my client computer join to the domain controller but sometime when I logon to the computer successfully, my desktop and task bar and everything on the screen won't appear. To solve this, I press control alt delete again and log off and logon to the computer again they the icon and task bar will appear.
It is not a big problem but its really make my client disturb their work. Does anyone know what is the cause of this problem and how to solve it?
Thank in advance!!!

Hi, I have configure a user logon script from the domain controller and also run the gpupdate /force command in order to update the policy. There are two drive that I mapped in the script (drive T: and drive Z .
The problem is sometime when the user logon to the computer, they didn't see the mapped drive at all until they restart the machine again. Or sometime they see only one mapped drive (drive T: or drive Z and some user could see both (that is no problem).
From here could anyone please let me know what is the likely cause of the problem?
Thank in advacne!!!

It's more likely that your login script is erroring out somewhere for some reason. Without the script being rewritten to provide logging information, you really have no information to go on.
|
|
|
|
|
I already test the script manually and found it working fine. There is no error during the script run. It seem that the GPO refreshment is not working well when the user is logon to Windows.
|
|
|
|

Yeah, it's probably going to work if you run it manually. What I'm saying is that, somehow, somehwere, the script is failing when it is run during logon. You're going to have to go through the script and put in some intrumentation code to log what's going on to a file so you can figure out where its failing.

Actually the loopback address is not limited to the 127 subnet, a loopback adaptor can be set to any address.

Your question is not very well formed and you left out quite a few details.
1.) What operating system? Linux? Windows Server? XP? Vista?
2.) Are you looking for commandline tools such as NetSh[^]?
3.) Are you looking for a programming solution or commandline?

Hello Mr. Nickolay Karnaukhov,
Thanks for your reply. Unlike you,I refrain from blaming your community/nationality for poking your nose to make un-welcome comments about Indian developers and the not so polite attitude displayed in your mail-as i dont believe in such notions. I am sure that you didn't have any idea of what i was talking about in my post and didn't have anything to help. Like it or not, there are millions of Indian developers across the globe and across the industries whom people like you can seek inspiration from. I am an ordinary developer though who seeks to find answer to my small queries in places like codeproject where some wise and level headed people devote their time to spread knowledge and help lesser mortals like me.
Thanks and Best regards.

You're absolutely right! I'm not polite and should not be polite when someone ask dump and ugly formed questions. And you're absolutely right that millions of Indian developers work in different industries and countries but these 10 developers I knew and worked with during last years - were screwing up everything because of their mentality.
"Why should I bother to make things better if I get paid for doing nothing special"
What would you say on that?
And sorry if I hurt someone's feeling but I'm honest and all described above is truth.
P.S. I've spend many hours of work to debug, fix and finally complete one small project which was done by FIVE guys from Bangalor. That project took 6 month for them to make something that seems to be working however application wasn't completed. Customer was trying to make them fix it for next 6 month constantly paying them. But there was no luck. Then I got this project and finished it for one month, alone, at home, working for 2-3 hours per day.
So what would I think about Indian programmers?

May be you are right about the developers you are talking about. May be you are smarter and more talented and experienced then your fellow Indian colleagues or may be you are exceptionally talented.
But, If you are saying/thinking that you have not found smarter people then you or if you are saying/thinking that you have never been proved dumb in your career by someone more experienced/talented/smart, then I know that you are lying big time. Nobody in this world is absolute smartest/most talented/ever intelligent. I am pretty much sure that there are dumb people in every society including Russia. If that was not the case, they would not keep the word "dumb" in many languages in many countries. So please do not categorize people based on nationalities. Moreover, There is no person in this world which hadn't have his moments of dumbness.
Now to tell you the facts that there is highest percentage of Indian developers in organizations (e.g. NASA/Microsoft)that boast of having the smartest/talented people in the world.
No every country has shown there share of dumbness/follies in their history including Russia/former Soviet Union, so dont blame India alone for dumbness detected in this world.
As far as I am concerned, i do not have any problem if you think i am dumb. One should have the ability to ask the dumbest of questions if one needs to gain some knowledge.
Gajendra
