Sure, you can use xp_cmdshell to run a bcp command from a query window. You might have to first turn on the ability for SSMS to use a Windows command shell as it is usually off by default. If needed, run the following commands first:
EXEC sp_configure 'show advanced options', 1
RECONFIGURE
EXEC sp_configure 'xp_cmdshell', 1
RECONFIGURE
Then run your xp_cmdshell using: EXEC xp_cmdshell '(your bcp command here)'
If needed, turn back off the ability to use Windows command shell with:
EXEC sp_configure 'xp_cmdshell', 0
RECONFIGURE
EXEC sp_configure 'show advanced options', 0
RECONFIGURE
-NP
Never underestimate the creativity of the end-user.

Hi all,
I have posted the same question some time ago... but I didn't get any solution. Please read below first...
I want to connect a MySql Database.
Suppose.....
Database Name is mydb
Database located on PC-1 (IP- 192.168.0.10)
PC-1 user id = abc
PC-1 password= 123
MySQL Server user ID = root
MySQL Server password= mypassword
now what will be the connection string for PC-1 to connect to the database ?
now I want to connect the database(mydb) from another pc (suppose this pc name is PC-2 and the IP is 192.168.0.11)
what will be the connection string for PC-2 to connect the PC-1 database ?
I searched connectionstrings.com[^] and found ...
Standard
Server=myServerAddress;Database=myDataBase;Uid=myUsername;Pwd=myPassword;
and
Specifying TCP port
Server=myServerAddress;Port=1234;Database=myDataBase;Uid=myUsername;
Pwd=myPassword;
but nowhere found if the server pc (PC-1) is protected by user id and password. In this case what should I do ?
I Tried both the above connection string. They are Ok for PC-1 to connect its own database (localhost) but when I tried to connect the database from PC-2, I got the error
Quote: Host '192.168.0.11' is not allowed to
connect to this server
<big>Can anybody help me ?</big>

Biplob Singha Shee wrote: Please read the entire question first I did. Twice. The answer "I cannot do that" doesn't mean that the answer you have been given was incorrect. You could have asked how to find the path. I'd answer that you can search your entire HD. By hand.
Most (professional) databases do not allow making remote connections in a default install. It's a security-thing. You cannot change that using a connection-string.
The fact that you're using XAMP simply means that the config-files are in another location than the default MySQL path. You'd have to find the file yourself, make the change to allow remote connections, and restart the server.

Open a command window on the CLIENT machine - NOT the database machine.
Verify that you have telnet.
Run telnet use the following command.
telnet 192.168.0.11 1234
There are two results to the above. First it succeeds which means it presents a blank screen (command window) or it returns an error message either quickly or after a couple of minutes.
Note carefully unless the above succeeds NOTHING you do with a connection string will EVER succeed at working.
If the above fails then you must look to something besides your application for a solution. Some POSSIBLE but not a complete list are the following
- The database is not set up to accept remote connections.
- The database is using a different port.
- The host name\ip address is wrong.
- there is a firewall that is preventing the connection.
- There is no possible network path from the client machine to the database machine.

Hi, thank you for your reply.
For your information I am using Windows 7 Ultimate and I am coding in VB.NET 2010.
I checked the link but I can not understand what they are saying... maybe it is because for other platform they are saying about...

hello, i m at just start to learn SQL..
plz give me guidance from which references i should proceeed!
|
|
|
|
|
Are you learning it fomr a development POV or as a potential DBA, they are 2 VERY different things.
For development I would.
Buy a beginner book on database design and work through the examples and then
Do a search here and on SQLSErverCentral.com for articles on TSQL.
Never underestimate the power of human stupidity

Here's what I did to learn TSQL. I first downloaded and installed SQL Server 2008 Express R2 with Advanced Services. At that time I also downloaded the "Books-on-Line" help volume for that inastallation; typically available on the same webpage as the SQL Server Express Edition mentioned above, here-after refered to as the "BOL".
Then, I went to codeplex and searched on the term "Adventure Works". The return was a dozen or so flavors of downloadable material available right there at codeplex. Downloading ALL of them, and then installing them on top of the new Express installation you've successfully just gone through results in only a few mixups when referenceing example code from within the BOL. And that's the key.
The BOL maintains verbose example for practically everything you can do with SQL Server. Including codeplex's Adventure Works examples.
The whole process, downloading, making sure you've got ALL the databases, then installing everything (loads of fun itself), is SO easy that not doing this and instead refering to some hardcopy volume by some third-party entrepreneur shipped with a dinky little disc of samples makes little sense.
I guarantee you'll be TSQL coding in no time!
And by the way, this BOL IS a HELP FACILILTY OF THE OLD KIND ... Guaranteed to be able to find what you're looking for because there's a list of everything in the left-hand margin. You do know A comes before B which comes before C ... in the alphabet, correct?

I am working on an app where I now need to keep the production DB up to date with the changes we're making in development. In addition, there is another team that needs to work with this DB.
Can anyone recommend tools for keeping Production and Development DB's in sync.
Requirements include
1) Structure changes.
2) Data cannot be lost.
Thanks
If it's not broken, fix it until it is

Kevin - might also help if you mention
a) 'which' db eg SQL Server, Oracle, {other}
b) how fast/how many updates occur in a unit of time
c) what sort of distance is between prod and dev db's - eg, are they separated into 2 different data centres, 1000 km apart for example
d) how fast do you expect the data to be avail on the dev db - is it 'real time transactional' for example, or 'batch with a 24 hour window'
(because the answers to those questions could really shape someones response)
Let me give an example
if you said a) = Oracle, b) = < 1000 transactions an hour, c) = 1000km, and you had a reliable pipe between Data Centres, then I might respond 'oracle log shipping', which is fairly low-tech, cheap, but meets those requirements
[edit] included a 'd' [/edit]

Fair enough....
a) SQL 2008 R2.
b) Updates probably will be weekly, but could be more often.
c) Production DB is in Winnipeg Canada. I am in development in Southern California.
d) Data will be in use immediatley in Canada.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is

We use Red-Gate SQL compare for deployment of scripts (schema changes). If we have to move any data into production it is a 3 week process with multiple sign offs and blood on the table.
You could set up and automated deployment process that would:
take a backup of the production
script the changes (Red-Gate)
copy the scripts to the production server
run the scripts on production
take a backup of the production
FTP it to the dev server
restore the production backup to the dev server.
However I would shoot the person who suggested you automate this, I want someone hand holding the processes at every step, oversight and someones balls at risk if production goes down.

really ? thats a bit drastic isnt it .. if you cant afford a decent replication scheme, do you want to be a slave to manual methods ? different strokes for different folks I guess
We use disk level mirroring between prod and d/r - an initial mirror is replicated to our d/r site over dark fibre - that has its issues as well - if the prod mirror is corrupted, then, so is the d/r mirror (thats a basic level explanation, its a bit more complicated) .. my point is, not everyone has the $$ for big buck solutions, or the need, but I would automate a 'simpler' process as much as possible (caveat) with the appropriate checks and balances and control-points, and, everything has different 'angles'/pitfalls ..so know the weak points of a solution

Actually I was talking about the automated deployment TO production, that is something I would not want to do, the process yes but not the initiation of that process.
Replication and backup distribution of the production database is something I would highly approve of if I could get it, policy, the f***ing god POLICY will not allow production data in dev. Ah well you work in finance you have to abide by their rules .

sorry - my fault
production data in dev - yeah, a tricky one - we have a process that 'washes the data'/ anonymizes it

And I still need a dispensation from the god Policy to get the data!

You are going to be doing structure and data changes to a production database on a weekly basis?
And I can only suppose that there is other software that uses it which will also need to be updated.
Certainly not something I would want to see.
Better make sure that you have complete automated unit and system testing.
And have a lot of time to dedicate to implementing the automated deployment and providing for a rollback for ALL systems.
I doubt you will find a tool that does it all. And every database change will need to be evaluated for rollback impact.
