Hi,
I am basically a desktop app developer, and for last 1 year I'm into mobility domain, working on apps, and multimedia.
I have very good grip on C, C++ and basically know some HTML, I also have good knowledge of Database query languages.
I'm planning to come up with a website, which is basically like a social networking site facebook, but to be meant for different reason ( Sorry, I can't discuss on that ).
I don't have much knowledge in web development. but I'm confident that I can work on, HTML, JavaScript,PHP.
So can please someone help me ,
1) What technologies should I start.
2) How these networking sites are built, with user login etc.
3) Is there any helping documents which I can refer to.
4) What database technologies that I should learn.
I am not really worried about the time. I hope you people help me in this regard.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Vijay.

Take a look at http://www.dotnetnuke.com/[^]
This would allow you to get a website up and running in very short amount of time.
Download the evaluation copy, get yourself some books on DotNetNuke and really give it some consideration. I used it at a previous company (internal project) and was amazed.
There are also many companies out there that host DNN for you if you don't have a web server and a static IP address.
my 2 cents.

Thanks for the info David,I agree I shouldn't be spending much time on reinventing the wheel.
My idea was not to depend on any service provider except hosting.
Thank you.

I follow the lamp stack of Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP
I do this mainly because of cost, resources, a friendly and knowledged community can be easily found to help guide you on your way. This stack is also very wide used and for good reasons.
So to your questions
1) What technologies should I start.
PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript (and the jQuery library). For local dev I use the abyss x1 http because its free and very easy to setup. If you work on a linux box getting mysql, php and apache is often bundled in a group of packages that is an easier install. But Apache has a lot more bells and whistles to make it more custom, which why I use abyss. The order I would train in is html and css, then javascript and jQuery, and then PHP and MySQL. Once you get to PHP/MySQL you will want to focus on issues of sessions and security.
2) How these networking sites are built, with user login etc.
This is a big question but the short answer is sessions. Sessions store values placed in them by the scripts you write, like a posted form sends username and password to a server. a script on the server scrubs the input, to protect from hackers, and validates the info. If its correct then a session variable(s) is(are) set so you can maintain persistant data between page request. Session related variables can include user name, security level, a saved shopping cart, etc.
3) Is there any helping documents which I can refer to.
To numerous to count. This site, "Code Project" is a truly great resource for code snips and guidance. And I do not get paid to write this...well I do not think I do...maybe I should ask also: http://www.php.net/ , http://www.mysql.com/ , http://www.w3schools.com/html/ , http://www.w3schools.com/js/ , http://jquery.com/ , and a place to see where online applications are going sites like this http://html5demos.com/ give you a glimps of whats possible
4) What database technologies that I should learn.
MySQL is the most common db engine you will find on the net.

Ok, so you will need to provide us with more information other then 'It aint working'.
Here are some steps that might give you a clue as to what is wrong:
- Look through the IIS access files, to see if the request to the service are giving status code 200 or 204 (if not the service is throwing an error, code 503)
- Look through the webservice logs, if any, to see if it tells you what is wrong
- Make sure you are calling the webservice right, keep in mind SOAP services require POST data in XML format.

Hi,
Currently, I'm working on a flex project with .Net integration via web service. I'm trying to bind the web service result to a xmllist but always fail to do so. Can anybody provide me ways on how to accomplish such? I have tried to cast the result to Xml in the web service object event handler but still got no luck. I have also tried to set the resultFormat to "e4x" but still it doesn't work.
Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

Hello anybody knows how to match the height of my sidebar area to my content area? I just want my sidebar to be the same height as my content area(the posting area). I want it so that my sidebar background will extend all the way down matching the height of the content area, even the sidebar is not having a widget in it. Here is the site http://bloomtheflowercompany.yenius.com/ the green background should extend all the way down even if it has no widget.
Can I do it in CSS or I need a JavaScript in it??
Any help appreciated thanks...

One thing which might fit your needs is to enclose both sidebar and content in a <div>, then give your sidebar a height of 100%. That way, the main content "drives" the height of the enclosing div, and the sidebar follows. CSS is cheap, so have a play!

Please consider the following code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.or
g/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<title>test</title>
</head>
<body>
For more information about
<div style="margin-left: 2.0in">
<a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bond_duration
class="wideAnchor200" target=_blank>
Wikipedia Article
</a>
</div>
</body>
</html>
In this case, I am using the div tag with inline CSS to indent the link to Wikipedia. However, it is not working. I am hoping that somebody here can tell me what I am missing.
Thanks

I can't find any reference to margin-removed in CSS docco. Try using margin-left instead. In any case, w3schools[^] has a good CSS quick reference[^] where you should be able to find what you want.

Thanks for the response. You solved my problem. The string margin-removed in my earlier post was
placed there by this website. I do not understand why.

Sorry if I posted this question in this forum but its really the forum that answer all my question every time I had. I also don't know which section on this forum should I post it but its more on CSS I decided to post it here.
I am fixing this menu from the past developer of this site. However, I don't have any idea how did he installed this. I have tried deleting and activating the plug in again and again but it doesn't work perfectly.
Currently JQuery Accordion Menu Widget is overlapped by the other widget below it.
Here's the link of the site: http://primarycareadvisory.yenius.com/
Any idea on how to fix it?

Hello thanks for your reply.
Did you hover on it? In my browser IE and Firefox it is currently overlapped under by the other widget below it.
It should pull down together with its parent div I mean the blue background, when you hover on it. But its expand on its own.
Did you see that?

Hi All,
I'm trying to clear my browsing history then redirect the browser to the homepage when the Home link is clicked by using the following javascript code :
<pre lang="Javascript">function Home()
{
var Backlen=history.length; history.go(-Backlen);
window.location.href=index.html;
}</pre>
The following is how I call the function inside the body of my HTML page
<pre lang="HTML"><a href="#" onClick="javascript: home();">Home</a></pre>
Please point out why my javascript code is not working, it does not redirect the browser to the homepage. What I want the code to do when the link "Home" on a page is clicked is clear the browser history, then redirect the browser to the homepage if I am on another page and not on the homepage. Thank you in advance for your help.

Why what is not working? The link is not working? The JavaScript is not working? Which part of it? You need to give a little more detail. Edit you post to include this information. Format the code snippet while your at it. Use the "code" toolbar item.
