Which is better to use?
It depends on the situation you are in.

Too vague and too large a topic. You need to buy books on the subject. It is not going to be answered in the space of a forum post.

It depends on the specific application type that you are on.

*sigh* I'm going to ask some obvious questions that we shouldn't really need to ask. I mean really, do you go to your doctor and say "I'm ill! is my diet the problem?" with out giving any other information?
So, what was the error message? If there was no error message what did it do instead of connecting to the datbase? Have you checked that the connection string is actually correct for the database?

You ought to be more clear in what you are encountering (the exact error message which you are getting) while attempting to connect to the data source.

Hi.,
Can you tell me where the Private variables are stored in ASP.NET ? as they are not stored in ViewState then where are they stored ? Any other kind of hidden type form field in the rendered Html page ? I am having a public property in my server control which will hold the LicenseKey and the LicenseKey will be assigned only in design time, not in runtime. And as ViewState is not secured, I choosed not to store my public property value in ViewState, rather I will use a static private string like this,
private static string _licenseKey;
public string LicenseKey
{
get
{
if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(MyClass._licenseKey))
return _licenseKey;
else
return String.Empty;
}
set
{
if(value == "Password")
MyClass._licenseKey = value;
}
}
Can you tell me how will it work when the page is rendered, is it a safe and efficient way to store my secured data ?

They are stored in memory for the duration of the instance of the class. When the class is no longer referenced they will be removed by the garbage collector.
You also need to know that ASP.NET is a STATELESS system. It does not hold onto state. You have to deal with state information yourself.

When a page is requested from a browser ASP.NET creates the appropriate page class, processes it and then discards the page. This mean that page classes (such as the one used for processing your ASPX page) exist normally for a fraction of a second before disappearing. ASP.NET does some clever trickery to make it appear that the class lasts longer than it actually does but in fact everytime you get a postback you have a new instance of that page class.

The web.config file is not a good route for passing data from one system to another. The web.config file exists to hold onto configuration information that will change infrequently.

You could use a service that takes the IP address and gives you back information about WHERE that IP address is located. This may be inaccurate for smaller countries. For example my IP address is registered in England while I'm located in Scotland.
Or you could make an assumption based on the locale in the request string.

Hi Colin Angus Mackay,
Can you specify any web service that takes IP address and gives back information about WHERE that IP address is located. Any links or ref. would be of great help....
Many Thanks,

We have a parent page which has got two usercontrols usercontrol1 and usercontrol2. Initially usercontrol1 will be visible=true and usercontrol2 will be visible=false. On click of a button in usercontrol1, usercontrol2 is made visible. During button click, both the controls page load shows ispostback as true. But after making the usercontrol2 visible, the page loads for the second time(both in parent page and usercontrol2), and the ispostback returns false. Please suggest.

Hello,
I want to display a hirarchical tree structure in form of a network graph, like a set of nodes connected with lines.
Does anybody knows a ASP.NET component which can handle it? I am still using infragistics´s charts for some other charts, but none of its features is able to display data as network graphs.
thanks
