Hi,
I would like to install the visual studio 2010 express onto my windows 7 machine.
Can I then start developing in Windows phone 7 using silverlight or do I have to install other things on top of vs2010 express?
Basically, after the install of vs2010 express, can I start devloping in WP7 straight away?
Thanks

If you want to develop for Windows Phone 7 using the express version, then you need the
VisualStudioExpress2010ForWindowsPhone.
All the other dependency stuff will be installed such as the .net framework and so on(if you don't already have them).
All the best,
Dan

Is it still ok that I already have vs2010 express, sql server 2008 express?
So installing from the link you sent will not interfere with the softwares I mentioned which I already have?
Thanks

It shouldn't. IF you have wewen(win 7) most definitely it will be fine.
All the best,

Hi all,
I am trying to show a video clip after the user clicks on a thumbnail image. I tried 3 ways already, without joy
1) I included the video as a resource in the project – but it took too long to load, obviously
2) I tried the following line, which opens the video nicely , but in another browser window
System.Windows.Browser.HtmlPage.Window.Navigate(new Uri("http://youtu.be/code_for_video"), "", "toolbar=1,menubar=1,resizable=1,scrollbars=1,top=0,left=0");
3) I tried the following line, which doesn’t work
htmlHost.SourceUri = new Uri("http://youtu.be/code_for_video");
I am doing something wrong? Am I missing something essential? Should I try something else?
I want to show the video in something like an iframe, but I can’t get anything worthwhile after numerous Google searches.
I am using Silverlight 3, and Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010 Express.
Any advise, guidance and suggestions are welcome.
Thanks.

Hey Navin,
Thanks for the prompt reply
I do, however, want to embed the video into my SILVERLIGHT app, and not on the apsx page.

Hi Mc,
Why you are not trying for YoueTube API? Bcz. if u want to show youtube video, then it will embed that video frame into your page. If you are using silverlight control, then just pass the video url to your media control. Hope it work.
Best of luck!

I have even tried the VideoBrush today, with no success
See code below.
On page Player:
…
<UserControl.Resources>
<MediaElement x:Name="mediaPlayer" Opacity="0">
<VideoBrush x:Name="brush" SourceName="mediaPlayer"/>
</UserControl.Resources>
…
<Rectangle x:Name="rect">
…
Then from the xaml page where the user clicks on the image to see video clip:
…
player.mediaPlayer.Source = new Uri("http://youtu.be/code_of_video");
player.rect.Fill = player.brush;
…
Please help me!

Hi. I am quite new to WPF programming (basically programming itself) but I like learning it. I am working on a silly project that has two windows.
The window1 has a bunch of textboxes and gets values from the user. For example, "age, runs scored, average, highest score, etc"
When the user clicks the submit button, the window2 should open.
I've achieved this by using "window2.show(); method"
The window2 is bit of a prat! It has a bunch of arrays. I want the values entered in the textboxes of window1 to be stored in the arrays of window2.
I came up with some preposterous syntactic ideas and ended in a fiasco.
one among them was this,
double[] average= new double[10];
average[0]=Window1.averagebox.text;
I was awarded with this error "An object reference is required for the non-static field, method, or property 'project12.Window1.averagebox'"
(i am guessing it also needs a conversion from string to double ? )
So, this is what i have in window1.cs
"public partial class Window1 : Window
{
public Window1()
{
InitializeComponent();
}
private void submit_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
{
var Window2 = new Window2();
Window2.Show();
}
}"
And this is a part of my code from window2.cs
"public partial class Window2 : Window
{
public Window2()
{
InitializeComponent();
double average[10] =new double[10];
average[0]=Window1.averagebox.text;
}
}"
I might do something with the arrays in Window2 later but my primary objective right now is to access that "average" textbox from window1 and store it in window2's array.
Please help my clumsy code..!.
Cheers !

This is an issue of design, you need to divorce your data from your UI, without going to the full MVVM framework, I suggest you have a class that stores your view data that is not the code behind, this can then be passed to or referenced by other forms.

thanks for the reply. can you provide an example code or syntax please ?

It's not a matter of coding or syntax it is your understanding of application design and how to construct an application.

I have a TreeView which I update it's ItemsSource property during runtime. The ItemsSource is assigned with multiple levels of data. During runtime I expand and collapse levels in the TreeView, but when I update the TreeView the expanded nodes are collapsed. Since I basically update the TreeView every time I select a node, to display it's child nodes, it gets very annoying to keep expanding the same nodes every time to watch the new level.
I understand why this is a issue for me because I set the ItemsSource property to null and than sets it with the proper data to update the TreeView's visualization. So of course all node are collapsed...
Here is an example of the code I use (It can be copied and pasted and tested right away):
<Window x:Class="Tree.MainWindow"
xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
xmlns:local="clr-namespace:Tree"
Title="MainWindow" Height="350" Width="525">
<Grid>
<TreeView Name="tvTree">
<TreeView.ItemTemplate>
<HierarchicalDataTemplate ItemsSource="{Binding SubNodes}" DataType="{x:Type local:Node}">
<Grid>
<TextBlock Text="{Binding Header}" />
</Grid>
</HierarchicalDataTemplate>
</TreeView.ItemTemplate>
</TreeView>
<Button Content="Button" Height="50" HorizontalAlignment="Left" Margin="456,263,0,0" Name="button1" VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="47" Click="button1_Click" />
</Grid>
</Window>
The C# behind it:
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Text;
using System.Windows;
using System.Windows.Controls;
using System.Windows.Data;
using System.Windows.Documents;
using System.Windows.Input;
using System.Windows.Media;
using System.Windows.Media.Imaging;
using System.Windows.Navigation;
using System.Windows.Shapes;
namespace Tree
{
public partial class MainWindow : Window
{
Node top;
Node root;
public MainWindow()
{
InitializeComponent();
root = new Node();
root.Header = "Root";
root.SubNodes.Add(new Node("B1"));
top = new Node();
top.SubNodes.Add(root);
Update();
}
public void Update()
{
tvTree.ItemsSource = null;
tvTree.ItemsSource = top.SubNodes;
}
private void button1_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
{
root.SubNodes.Add(new Node("B2"));
Update();
}
}
public class Node
{
List<Node> subNodes = new List<Node>();
string header;
public Node()
{
}
public Node(string header)
{
this.header = header;
}
public string Header
{
get { return header; }
set { header = value; }
}
public List<Node> SubNodes
{
get { return subNodes; }
set { subNodes = value; }
}
}
}
I use the button to add new data into the TreeView. Notice the Update() method which updates the TreeView's ItemsSource.
Can I in some way expand the nodes in the TreeView after I have changed the ItemsSource? I can keep track of which nodes are expanded or not (I left out that code in the example). I know about the .IsExpanded property in the TreeViewItem class, but in my case I don't have TreeViewItem in my ItemsSource so therefore I don't have any .IsExpanded property to use.
In some way I feel this approach maybe not be the best. Especially how I update the TreeView item. If there are any other way please tell me and tell me how.

Change you List<node> to an observablecollection<node> (reference system.collections.objectmodel) and comment out the update method after adding a node!

Seems to be working Thanks!

Using the right tools makes a huge difference, the observable collection and the onpropertychange wire up is what makes xaml binding work.

Hi,
I would like to purchase an apple mac laptop for learning and developing in:
1- visual studio express 2010 i.e. silverlight/wpf
2- sql server express 2008
3- Winidows phone 7
Is it possible to install the above softwares on apple mac laptop please?
Thanks
|
|
|
|
|
You will have to install windows on your mac first either via a virtual machine or boot camp http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1461

If your only reason to buy a laptop is to learn everything there is to know about visual studio, silverlight, wpf, WP7,... why on earth would you consider a mac?

Hi all, I am new to silverlight. I am a ASP.NET developer. I have to work on a project in which DevExpress Controls and Silverlight is used but i have only initial level undersatnding. Lots of work needs to be done on DevExpress Grid Control and it will be a copmlex grid in which data coming from different sources.Apart from this WCF RIA and Entity framework is being used. Please help me out to solve the devexpress grid finctioality in silvelight and please suggest me what are the best approaches to get familiar with these as soon as possible.
Thanks
