I work in defence so I can say the worse things get the more work we have - cynical but true.
Actually not quite so - the big money is in development and research, and when things start to go bang the customers lose interest in that. They want more bang and less future. Well, I can see their point of view.

To be honest i was indeed worried at the economic meltdown happening around us, and was preparing plan B, C and D to ensure i was organised and ready to expand my horizon of consulting options (i.e. not only to concentrate on architecture, but also to get ready for day-to-day development consulting) and product development oppurtunities.
I was also thinking as to what effect the economic meltdown was going to have on the thrid-party components development market - since i am one myself.
All that said, if my recent and the continuing present is any evidence, i am seeing things to the contrary of my initial fear.
I completed my recent consulting contract with one of the largest European projects as their Architect (of course i consult as a contractor for years now), and contrary to my fear of economic chaos around, i was able to get through quite a good count of consulting offers as .NET Architect straight-away (I am in the UK, which is worst hit by recession).
The consulting rates finally offered by the ultimate customer was almost at the same level as my earlier large scale projects (although the "middleman" agency did moan about at the start when they spoke to me, trying to get me a horrible rate quoting the economic reccession)... but i was able to convince my usual daily rates once i had spoken to the customer!
Secondly, i also find a flood of product (my .NET controls products) sales coming ... to be honest it is now better than my sales around September-November 08.
I guess that, after all, the recession is not to hit you if you are in a trade that needs to keep happening whatsoever (like my architecting / design consulting on WCF implementations since these cannot go away since these are jobs that has to conitnue to be done - no matter what!), and also if you are selling stuff that are complex components that companies will continue to buy, considering the cost of in-house development + maintenance vis-a-vis support that you can have from thrid party vendors at a fraction of the potential in-house development cost.
All in all, i think if our consulting and business are in areas that needs to stay and continue to be done + your products portfolio are those that are worthwhile for customers to buy from you rather than to produce in-house, we are safe, no matter what economic meltdown may be going around.
So my answer to the poll question about my view of 2009 for my cpmpany and business is: "Very positive".
I thought of sharing my perspective and experience to you all, so there is some positve words going around rather than to hearing the usual economic meltdown and its scary effects.

In Indian perspective, the recent huge scam in Satyam Computer Services has significantly tantalized the Indian IT spectrum and share market. This coupled with the global meltdown is challenging growth prospects significantly.
Time alone can heal the wounds.

Good point. It is relative is it not?
Lower Class or Poor USA Citizen = Better off than most people in the world.
Almost everyone in the USA (unless you are homeless) still have a warm place to live, get a hot shower every day and enjoy red meat once in a while. I feel blessed everyday just to have been born in modern day America. It could be so much worse.

A-f***ing-men. I get down from time to time, but when I look at the news, holy crap, thank god I'm in the US. We do some terribly stupid things, but compared to a lot of other places, it could be so much worse. People in the States need to be made aware of just how lucky they are.

I must say here in the Netherlands business is still very good although big companies have trouble sending out their consultants to clients as their skill rates are below average. This is because most real professionals start their own company (going freelance).
As for me I prognosed a 30% grow for my company and even think to hire people through the net for projects. My public profile on linkedin[^]

The last quarter we made 25% redundant. This year its down to a 4 day week. The heatings turn down. we've lost a wharehouse. Travel has been suspended. No Christmas bonus. No pay rise. Its cold and starting to snow. The £ is almost the same as the euro. My mortgage hasn't gone down but the value of my house has. But at least I'm still working for the moment.
Why is it when you are busy everyone whats it yesterday, But when your not no-one has any work for you?

I'm a developer, and i live in Boston. I happen to know at least 2 long-term clients of ours has increased their budge for us... however even if i did need to find a new job, it would only take me a week or so. I'm really not worried even in this market.

It is very easy to point the finger at the government or at banks, but people fail to blame themselves.
If people would pay off their credit card bill every month, stop eating out for lunch and dinner every day and only buy things they can afford, then they would have more money and not be in such debt.
I'm being very general in my comment.

Didnt the banks make stellar losses but the managers und investmentbankers got hugh bonuses? And now the taypayer should help out with the TARP.
In my home country Germany our goverment spents around 50 Billions Euro for the troubled banks, but to help "Opel" (the german subsidary of GM) with 1 Billion Euro they discuss as chickens. And the small business peoples says: "No one helps us".
PS: I blame people for electing such politicians
