So, how often do you and your colleagues pretend the scanner is a phaser, and reenact some glorious Star Trek moment?

Wow! The MC9000[^] is really cool! Not only is it a phaser, it's also a tricorder! Wohoo!

I switched all the Percon scanners at Ace (my last steady job) to Symbol LS9100s a few years back. Awesome scanners! And of course, I got my fill of R2D2 references. Unfortunately, the somewhat challenged employees still picked them up and used them like handhelds, including dropping them on the concrete, throwing them under a counter, slamming the cables in the cash drawer...

Jarre, Vangelis, Oldfield, Kitaro, Tomita. Some sound track from favorite
old movies, like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Star Trek...
Usually co-workers complain, so I end up lowering the volume so low I can hardly
ear it anymore, then I turn it off for a few months and I rely on the joyous
white noise of the office.

I heard there is this new invention - revolutionary really - called headphones.

I use wireless headphones and still get complaints - the developer next to me has just got his own set, but has difficulty tuning out my choice of music as either his transmitter or headphones are a bit inadequate.
My choice is varied - Abba, Kate Bush, Motörhead, Air, Betty Boo, Suzanne Vega and the Rezillos are on the current list - but I find instrumental stuff most effective. Mike Oldfield and Jean-Michel Jarre are old favourites though I'm taking a break from them at the moment.

Well, I have a few such beasts at home, but the wires are too short!
I never remember to buy headphones when I have the opportunity to do so...

I usually listen to Doof (Techno) as it keeps me focused, and has no lyrics to distract my attention. If there are lyrics, my productivity plummets

I think you're right. I've noticed too that lyrics may sometimes be very distracting. I even sing along sometimes (which in turn distracts my co-workers)
