In my experience, noise cancelling headphones work for every voice except those you need to drown out most, those voices still penetrate and due to all the lovely noise cancellation they are even more emphasised in their annoyance. Music turned down low does a better job but then you can't hear things that are really important. Like someone shouting "free cakes" or the fire alarm. Re: I hate sounds. ANY kind of sounds. The last place I worked, when I first got there, us developers were in our own space. That was kind of nice, somebody would turn on a streaming service at a nice volume for some background. So I guess I don't mind music. If anyone has that kind of setup, I encourage you to make it democratic: let each person take a turn on picking the genre/channel/whatever. Who knows, you might get introduced to something you like but would never have heard of otherwise.
