...Quiet and Moderately Loud, actually. Has to be loud enough so I don't strain to hear what's playing, but not loud enough that I have to listen to it.

The golden rule for me is: _No voices_
When someone sings along, you start to listen, to interpret, whether you want it or not. And this consumes power, it distracts. Worst is, if you start to sing along by yourself.
I put a headset on, start some long running instrumental tracks, not loud, but loud enough to stop surroinding noises of colleagues nearby.
I put my phone on DnD, and go.
Best sound for me are medieval/irish/celtic folk sounds. nothing that is too fast and nothing that is as sleep-pill-like classics (Bach, Schubert... no way).
There is a great composer, Adrian von Ziegler, who makes _wonderful_ irish/fantasy music, which helps me through the day very often.

Lots of my medieval music (and let us include renaissance with it!) has vocal parts in languages were I don't understand a word. So the voice servers, musically, as another instrument.
I agree: Old music is great while I work. There is only one small problem: Sometimes it is so beautiful that I stop working, sitting still, just listening to the music, getting no work done.

Same here, except I'm in to smooth jazz, New Age, chill, some classical, and for migraine days, Gregorian chant.

I read many study which promote open office culture (low height separation between cubical) and no cabin culture. Definitely it will save some direct infrastructure cost but indirectly cost more due to unnecessary distractions / disturbances.
