I pried open the transformer that didn't work (brand new) that went with my never used USB to SATA/IDE converter. It rattled! I discovered that it came brand new with an exploded capacitor, the fuse on the circuit board blown and the rattling part was something that melted out of the circuit board when it blew. It was passed by QC #4  who must have thought that sizzling sound was correct.

3) Screw it, Ask a friend / neighbour / random stranger to take a look for you
4) Screw it, Go crazy with the screwdriver
5) Screw it, Replace the item.

If it moves and it's not supposed to apply duct tape.
If it doesn't move and it's supposed to apply WD40.
Problem solved!

Yes! If I recall, in the movie Gran Tarino, Clint Eastwood says something along the lines of any man worth his salt can do anything with duct tape or WD40

I lived in rural KY when younger and my ex-wifes uncle was a gentleman farmer and his toolbox was Vice grips, Duct tape and WD40, a screw driver and bailing wire...that was it!

If I can exchange the product then I am all for that instead of tinkering around with it.
Yes most likely the average tech savy person could fix most problems, but its the average non-tech savy person that I think of. So if I find that it's a difficult to use product and if the product has a steep learning curve to operate then I will encourage them to buy something else.

I think the FIRST thing I would do is unplug it.
