Most likely, yes.
Vuyiswa Maseko wrote: So far how can you tell if i can be one of the people who will be seleted for MVP
I can't. Each year the formula seems to have been tweaked somewhat. It means that I cannot predict what the final outcome is. However, certain things have remained consistent. Chris is looking for people who contribute positively by writing articles and/or helping people in the forums.

You are trying to be helpful, but there are areas for improvement. Your articles tackled architecture which is an area where you can have two experts disagree on the action to take. It is a very difficult subject area. You might try looking at writing about something simpler, or doing more research first.
Vuyiswa Maseko wrote: And What can i improve?
Read lots and spread the love! Seriously, read blogs, read books, attend user group events, keep learning. And to aid your comprehension tell others about it. The act of telling others helps solidify in your mind how something works, and others get stuff out of it too. Blog about the smaller things.

It is the first day of 2006 and I'm resurrecting part of an old signature. The two quotes I currently have in my signature here at CodeProject represent quite important ideals to me
"Man who stand on hill with mouth open will wait long time for roast duck to drop in." -- Confucius
This represents the ideal that hard work pays dividends. One cannot expect to sit back and have everything fall in to their lap. If you want something you have to work at that.
"If a man empties his purse into his head, no man can take it away from him, for an investment in knowledge pays the best interest." -- Joseph E. O'Donnell
This represents the ideal that education is a life long activity. It never stops. Just because you left school or university doesn't mean your days in education are over. I spend hundreds of pounds each year on books. I spend lots of time reading articles on websites such as this. While I am driving I listen to podcasts such as DotNetRocks[^] and IT Conversations[^] and I attend events such as those hosted by Agile Scotland[^] and Scottish Developers[^]. In fact, I am now a core member of Scottish Developers so this year I will be organising some of these events.
Finally, this will be the year I finally get my website going: http://www.colinmackay.net/[^]

Totally agree with that. Though I haven't dropped out of university, I have the feeling it doesn't teach me what is needed for me in order to pursue my dreams.
Totally agree with what Confucius said I'm really waiting for you website to be up and running because I Know it would be something worth reading.

Well, hopefully it shouldn't be too long. I'm going to be installing the latest build of DotNetNuke[^]soon and putting something together. I got DNN 4.0.0, the first version availble for .NET 2.0, when it was first released - However it had many bugs. I had the feeling that they rushed that release so that it would come out at the same time as .NET 2.0 itself. Now that version 4.0.2 is out I feel more comfortable about using it.

It's the first time I hear about DotNetNuke, and since you're using it on your website I guess it must be quite good. I'll give it a try. Seems very promicing.

Gee Jeremey - It was never my intention to be unkind. You made a post[^], I stated my opinion and tried to help you along. I empathised with you because I've been in a similar situation. I am sympathetic to what you are going through right now. Perhaps you're being a little impulsive here (perhaps not, I don't know).
Anyway, I wish you well in your hunt for new work. Good luck with the future.

SqlDataSource.CancelSelectOnNullParameter is a curious feature of ASP.NET 2.0 that could be useful, but this evening I just found frustrating.
The default state of this parameter on the SqlDataSource control is true which means I spent about an hour and a half trying to figure out why my SqlDataSource.Selecting event was firing, but the SqlDataSource.Selected event wasn't and why my Repeater control wasn't getting populated.
Personally, I think the default state of the CancelSelectOnNullParameter should be false because that way, if there is a null parameter an exception is thrown and the developer has a clue as to what is happening. Whereas when it is set to true nothing happens and people will spend time banging heads off desks* in frustration trying to figure out what is going wrong.
However, that said, ASP.NET 2.0 will rock your socks off!! I'm learning all the new controls and so far I've saved somewhere in the region of 80 hours of development time over doing the same job in ASP.NET 1.1. And that's with me doing the job on the learing curve at the same time!

Okay, so I was 30 last week. I completely pigged out as I went out to restaurants with my family (Thursday - Spanish Tapas), people from work (Friday - Oriental) and my friends (Saturday - Hard Rock Café).
My weight is unfortunately back up to 91kg.
So, this week, I am going to do two sessions each day at the gym. A morning session on the machines and a lunch time session to go swimming.

Well, I stepped on the scales this morning and the reading said 90.3kg just as it did last week. I would have been more disappointed by this, but I've had a nagging feeling the last few days that my scales are not working properly. Normally, during the week, my weight fluctuates, but for the purposes of this I am only taking the readings first thing on a Monday morning. However this past week my scales have said 90.3kg every time I stepped on them.
So when I was at the gym this morning I decided to use their scales. They are the old fashioned kind with a dial that spins around so I cannot see from the display a reading to the nearest 100g. So what did these scales display.... 87kg! Wow!
So, now I am on the look out for another set of scales so I can confirm which are right.

I don't know about that.
However, since it was my birthday last week I pigged out. My parents took me out on Thursday to a really good Spanish Tapas restaurant*, on Friday I went to an oriental restaurant with a couple of people from work and then on Saturday night I went to the Hard Rock Café with friends. Lots and lots of most excellent food and that feeling of almost being able to comfortably use the next notch along my belt has gone. So, double sessions at the gym for me this week!
But on a slightly different topic - I got quite a few Jessops vouchers for my Birthday last week. I'm thinkning of waiting until after Christmas so that I can get more vouchers and take advantage of the January sales. That also gives me time to review some cameras.
Now, all I need is a good course on composing shots. I get the Edinburgh City Adult Education course catalog sent to my parents house (living in Fife, I'm not strictly eligable, but I give my parents address if I sign up for anything.) and they have a course on Digital Photography. At first I thought it was excellent and then I managed to get details of the course. No cameras involved - it is all how to use Adobe Photoshop.
* Its called Rincón de España (translation: Corner of Spain) and if you are in Edinburgh again you must go there. It is fabulous.

Sounds like a good idea if you don't mind waiting! In the next couple of weeks Photokina happens, which is one of the two largest camera shows held each year. A lot of new camera's will be released at this time, and prices of older models will lower - well worth waiting until after that at least!
As for the course, that does suck. Unfortunately I can't recommend any, but I'd be more than happy to spend some time with you once you get your camera (we could work out London or Edinburgh closer to the time).
Is the next Euro-CPian meet still on? We're off to Sweden for a week tomorrow, man time is draggin!!!

Indeed.

That would be excellent. Unless I get a fit of impatience I'll probably be getting the camera in January, so we can arrange something for late January/early February.
Megan Forbes wrote:

As far as I know, it isn't. I sent a message round the EuroCPian Yahoo group about 2 months ago explaining that I wouldn't be able to attend as I am a bit low on funds at the moment and asked if anyone else wanted to take over the arrangements. No one came forward.
I'm quite happy to arrange a new meeting if I can go myself. (It would be a bit depressing if I arranged for everyone else to have fun, but I couldn't join in.) Anyway, that kind of limits the range of locations. (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Perth or Stirling)

Excellent. My sister went to Sweden earlier this year. She really enjoyed it. Have fun - and remember to send Bob a postcard!

A while ago I wrote about The Perils of Loyalty Card Data[^]. Well, today I got my quarterly Tesco Club Card statement and it seems that I am obviously not spending enough. Last quarter I hadn't spent enough even for some vouchers. This quarter, I managed to spend enough for £2.00 of vouchers! It actually works out to be £40 per month, because I had some points carried over from the precious quarter.
Their analysis engine must be desperate to get me to shop there and build up points. Normally I get extra vouchers in the form of money off coupons, however this month all the extra vouchers were in the form of get extra points. This way I still get the money off, but I have to wait until the next quarterly statement to get the vouchers. And also, to keep me away from the competition, one of the vouchers is for a free "Back for Life". The extra strong reusable bags with a large Tesco logo emblazoned on the size. Obviously they think that if I use it, I will be embarrassed to go to ASDA with it. Personally, it won't make a difference, I've got a "bag for life" from IKEA and it does me fine.
